PRAIRIE VIEW, Texas – The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball Team (11-13, 1-2 SLC) picked up win number 11 on the season as they defeated the hosting Prairie View A&M Panthers (8-11, 2-0 SWAC) by a final score of 9-2 on Tuesday afternoon.
Following a scoreless first posted by both sides, the Lumberjack offense pounced on the Panthers in the top of the second. Lilly Bean drew a walk to start the inning, which was followed by an Adelyn Becerra single and Kyi'Marri Ester reaching on an error to load the bases for SFA. Malia Jones would step in and show some incredible discipline as she would draw a walk to score Bean and put SFA ahead 1-0. Kaylee Paul would follow suit of Jones as her patience would pay off in the form of another walk, this time scoring Becerra and putting SFA ahead 2-0.
The scoring did not stop there, however, as Mikaelah Burkland stepped in and sliced a double into right field to score both Jones and Ester and launch SFA ahead 4-0. Ellie Vance would reach on an error, two batters later, that allowed both Burkland and Paul to score and staked the 'Jacks to a 6-0 lead. The Panthers would respond with a run in the bottom of the second to make the score 6-1 in favor of SFA heading to the third inning.
The runs would continue to come for SFA in the third as Adelyn Becerra would crush her second home run of the year to right field to push SFA ahead 7-1. The Panthers would once again have a response in the home half of the inning as an RBI double kept the score 7-2 SFA. The two schools would exchange scoreless fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, before the 'Jacks would add on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the seventh.
With Alyssa Arnall on first, Ella Hill would step in and launch the Lumberjacks second long ball of the game as she hit her second home run of the year to extend the SFA lead to 9-2, which they would not relinquish in an eventual 9-2 road win over the Panthers.
