YOUNGSVILLE, La.- The Stephen F. Austin softball team (6-10) picked up two wins on the first day of the Mardi Gras Mambo. First the 'Jacks picked up an extra inning walk-off win against the Iowa State Cyclones (6-8) and then followed up with a shutout against the Monmouth University Hawks (3-12).
Game 1:
Brooke Gainous earned the start in the circle for the 'Jacks. Iowa State got out to a fast start with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. SFA responded with an RBI groundout from Ellie Vance that scored Mikaelah Burkland from third, 3-1. In the bottom of the third, Jamie Varga got things going for the 'Jacks with a leadoff triple and then was brought in on a bunt from Kaylee Paul on the next play, 3-2. The next inning, SFA would tie the game up at three with a fielder's choice from Lilly Bean that scored Ellie Vance from third. Neither team scored before the end of the seventh which sent the game to extra innings.
