YOUNGSVILLE, La.- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks Softball team (4-10, 0-0) gets set for their final tournament of the 2025 season as they travel to Youngsville to compete in the Mardi Gras Mambo, first squaring off with the Iowa State Cyclones (6-7, 0-0)
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks will look to get back in the win column at the Mardi Gras Mambo. SFA wrapped up play at the Battle on the Bayou tournament last weekend and competed until their final out the entire tournament as three of their four games were decided by three or fewer runs, with two games being decided by a single run. The Lumberjacks bats were hot in the opening game of the tournament as they put up eight runs, and 15 hits in a 12-8 slugfest against the ULM Warhawks and recorded at least five hits in three of the four games in the tournament. The 'Jacks now look to close out their tournament schedule for the season on a high note and improve some early-season tough luck.
Cyclones at a Glance:
The Iowa State Cyclones close out their tournament schedule for the 2025 season at the Mardi Gras Mambo and will also be looking to get back in the win column after falling to no. 3 ranked Florida in their final game of the Sun Devil Classic their last time out. The Cyclones posted a 2-2 record at the Sun Devil Classic with run-rule wins over Portland State and New Mexico State that saw the Cyclones score 21 combined runs in the wins, as they scored 27 runs over the tournament, and will look to carry that offense into the Mardi Gras Mambo.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
Kaylee Paul continues to rake against opposing pitchers as she owns an impressive .457/1.051/.514 slash line to start the season and leads the Lumberjacks with eight RBIs. Ellie Vance has had no trouble getting on-base and swiping extra bases as her 17 hits lead all Lumberjack hitters, while her six stolen bases have her tied for fifth in the Southland this season. Gabby Coffey and Ella Hill have brought the pop to the SFA lineup to begin the year as Coffey ranks third in the Southland with three home runs, while Hill has a home run of her own this year. Jordyn Ages and Alexis Telford have been stellar in the circle for the Lumberjacks as they have combined to throw 36.1 innings, allowing just 10 earned runs, and striking out a combined 24 batters, while each has thrown a complete game this season.
Scouting Report-Cyclones:
Jessie Clemons, Angelina Allen, and Sydney Malott have formed a terrifying hitting trio for the Cyclones this season as all three own averages over .375, and each has at least two home runs, three doubles, and 10 RBIs to their names as well. Clemons leads the team with 19 hits, while Allen has the team's lone triple, and Malott leads all Cyclones with 12 RBIs. Lauren Schurman has pitched to the tune of a team-best 3.10 era, striking out 17 hitters over 29.1 innings pitched.

Friday's tournament opener against Iowa State will see the sixth all-time meeting between these two schools, with Iowa State leading the series 4-1. The Cyclones have won the last three meetings including the most recent one in 2009 when they posted a 3-1 win over SFA.

The Monmouth University Hawks come into the Mardi Gras Mambo fresh off the heels of the Scotsman Invitational that saw the Hawks post a 3-1 record over the invitational, as they carry a two-game winning streak into Friday afternoon against SFA. Monmouth recorded wins over Cleveland State and Presbyterian, before the Hawks defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 9-2 in the tournament finale, as they look ahead to the Mardi Gras Mambo before jumping right into conference play against North Carolina A&T following the Mardi Gras Mambo.
Scouting Report-Hawks:
Jayla Cadena and Kylee McLain received their dues from the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) following their performances at the Scotsman Invitational. Cadena took home CAA Pitcher of the Week honors following a 2-0 record from the Invitational as she pitched 12 scoreless innings, capped off with a complete game shutout win against Presbyterian. Meanwhile, McLain was named CAA Hitter of the Week after she tallied a .333 batting average over the weekend that included a pair of doubles, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

The Army West Point Black Knights will be carrying a two-game winning streak of their own into the Mardi Gras Mambo as they won three of their four games at the Columbus Classic two weeks ago. The Black Knights claimed a 7-0 win over LIU to start the Classic, before closing out the tournament with a pair of nail-biting 2-1 and 5-4 wins over Tennessee Tech and LIU respectively to close out the Columbus Classic. Army is no stranger to winning close games as four of their five wins this season have been by one run.
Scouting Report-Black Knights:
Taylor Brown spearheads the Army offensive attack as she has slashed to the tune of a line of .417/1.125/.625 to start her 2025 campaign. Caitlyn Newburn has been crushing opposing pitchers this season as she has clobbered four home runs and a pair of doubles in 10 games while driving in a team-high 12 RBIs. Breanna Izzo has been a workhorse in the circle for Army as she has pitched in 29.1 innings, throwing two complete games, and posting a 3-1 record so far in 2025.

The University of West Georgia Wolves will be looking to get back in the win column over the course of the Mardi Gras Mambo following a loss to Samford their last time out on Wednesday. Prior to the game against Mercer, the Wolves competed in the Carolina Classic last weekend in Chapel Hill. The Wolves opened their season at the Runnin'Bulldogs Classic, winning their first three games of the Classic and wasting no time making a statement win as they posted a 15-1 win over Drexel in their first game of the year.
Scouting Report-Wolves:
Blaire Bizette has been on a tear for the Wolves to start 2025 as she owns a .500 batting average, adding on a double, a homerun, and 12 RBIs to her early season total for West Georgia. Megan Waites has formed a nice hitting duo with Bizette at the plate as her .323 batting average, 10 hits, and 12 total bases all rank her second on the Wolves. Jenna Samuel has been phenomenal for the Wolves in the circle as she has pitched to a 1.87 era over 15 innings and has secured a pair of wins so far in 2025.

The University of Maine Black Bears head to the Mardi Gras Mambo looking to snap a three-game losing skid as they come in fresh off competing in the Mardi Gras Classic last weekend in Mobile. The Bears had a tough matchup their last time out as they fell to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the finale of the Mardi Gras Classic, with the Black Bears having one more tournament on their 2025 schedule, the Yale Tournament, the first weekend of March in New Haven, Connecticut.
Scouting Report-Black Bears:
Gabby Papushka has done a little bit of everything at the plate for the Black Bears to start 2025 as she has a double, triple, a pair of home runs, and six RBIs to lead all Black Bear hitters. Immy Gie is second on the squad with five RBIs on the year, while Nora Campo has the Black Bears other home run this year. Madison Simmerman has made her presence felt as a freshman in the circle for Maine as she was recently named both the America East Pitcher and Rookie of the Week, while owning a sparkling 1.67 era so far in 2025.
