NATCHITOCHES, La.- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks men's basketball team (12-13, 5-9) will carry their three-game winning streak on the road as the 'Jacks open up a four-game road trip against Southland rival Northwestern State University (11-13, 8-6).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks have started to find their stride at the perfect time as they continue to grind out wins and keep their Southland Tournament playoff hopes alive. The Lumberjacks earned their third straight win on Monday pulling away late from the UTRGV Vaqueros in an 85-75 win to close out a three-game homestand. A large reason for the Lumberjacks late season surge has been powered by their offense posting over 75 points in four of their last five games and having scored over 75 points in all three wins during their current win streak. The Lumberjacks revitalized offense is paired with their elite defense that is holding opponents to just 66.1 points per game, (second best in the Southland). SFA has won consecutive games by double-digits. SFA now sets their sights on exacting some revenge on the road against Northwestern State University as they look avenge an earlier 57-54 home overtime loss to the Demons a few weeks ago and continue to gain valuable ground in the Southland standings.
Demons at a Glance:
The Northwestern State University Demons return home to open up a two-game homestand against SFA looking to complete the season sweep of the Lumberjacks. The Demons will close out their homestand against Lamar as they continue to be in the middle of the pack in the Southland standings as they remain tied with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Houston Christian with an 8-6 SLC record. The Demons have won two of their last three games as they got back in the win column on Monday evening with a 72-60 road victory over Nicholls State and now return home looking to improve on their 7-3 home record this season.
Scouting Report-Lumberjacks:
A pair of Lumberjacks caused some double trouble for the Vaqueros defense on Monday night as Keon Thompson and Matt Hayman stuffed the stat sheet in the home win for SFA. Thompson continues to be a scoring machine for the Lumberjacks as he recorded his second game in his last three with over 20 points in route to a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double performance. It was his second double-double of the year while he set a new career-high in rebounds. Hayman continues to be the model of consistency for SFA. The senior guard has recorded a career best 10 consecutive games scoring 10 or more points while dropping his first double-double of the season with a 14-point, 10-rebound performance vs. UTRGV. Three other Lumberjacks joined Hayman and Thompson in the scoring frenzy against the UTRGV defense as Chrishawn Christmas (15 points), Dominic Pangonis (11 points), and Nana Antwi-Boasiako (11 points) all finished in double figures and helped lead a balanced SFA scoring attack against the Vaqueros.
Scouting Report-Demons
Addison Patterson has been a key component of the Demons offensive attack as he has recorded double-digit points in seven of his last eight games and leads the team with a 12.9 points per game scoring average. Patterson has been equally effective in helping his teammates score as he has dished out 77 assists, while leading the team with 33 steals defensively. Micah Thomas has formed a nice compliment to Patterson as he has finished with double-digit points in three straight games and averages 10.8 points per game. Willie Williams has been one of the premier rebounding men in the Southland this season as his 178 boards this year leads all Demons and ranks him second in the Southland.
Series:
Saturday afternoon's conference rivalry clash will mark the 82nd all-time meeting in this historic Southland rivalry. Northwestern State University leads the all-time series 42-39 and won the most recent meeting just over two weeks ago when they defeated the Lumberjacks 57-54 in overtime at the Sawmill.
