NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (12-13, 5-9) picked up their third straight win on Monday night at the Sawmill as they closed out their homestand with an 85-75 home win over the UTRGV Vaqueros (13-12, 5-9).
The Vaqueros came out of the gates firing in this one making three-pointers on back-to-back possessions to open the game and held an early 6-0 lead. The Lumberjack offense didn't wait long answer as a Juhlawnei Stone layup got SFA on the board, and helped spark a 10-2 'Jacks scoring run with points from Keon Thompson, Nana Antwi-Boasiako and Chrishawn Christmas to put SFA in the lead 10-8 with five minutes gone in the opening half.
The next five minutes offered a stark contrast to the opening five minutes as it became a defensive battle, with points from Keith Lamar and Keon Thompson offset by seven Vaqueros points and UTRGV held a 17-14 lead at the midway point of the first half.
Shortly after the midway point of the first half, Myles Jenkins and Dominic Pangonis would find their touch from deep hitting consecutive triples to put SFA in the lead 20-19. The final eight minutes of the first half saw both teams exchanging blows on the Sawmill court as points from Matt Hayman, Dominic Pangonis, Nana Antwi-Boasiako, and Keon Thompson were almost identically matched by UTRGV. SFA held a 32-28 lead as both teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.
The Vaqueros opened the second half with a basket on their first possession. Keon Thompson came out of the half with some momentum as he rattled off the first four SFA points in the second half to keep SFA in the lead 36-33. Both teams kept the points coming in the first five minutes of the half as SFA maintained their lead, 42-38, thanks to points from Myles Jenkins, Matt Hayman, and Keon Thompson.
A 6-2 scoring run by UTRGV briefly tied the game at 44, however, SFA immediately responded with an 8-2 scoring run of their own with points from Matt Hayman, Dominic Pangonis, Chrishawn Christmas, and Thierno Sylla to launch SFA back in the lead 52-46. The Lumberjacks tacked on three more points and held a 55-48 lead with 10 minutes left in the game.
The two schools continued to exchange baskets over the next five minutes. SFA maintained their steady lead and extended their lead to double digits at 70-59 with five minutes left in the game. The Vaqueros would not go down quietly as a 7-2 scoring run by UTRGV brought them back to within six of the 'Jacks at 72-66 with three minutes left in the contest.
The final three minutes saw UTGV come within six of SFA on multiple occasions, however, the Lumberjacks shut down any chance of an UTRGV comeback by converting on their free-throws down the stretch, with Keon Thompson putting an exclamation point on the SFA win with a thunderous dunk to put SFA ahead 83-75 with 26 seconds left. The Lumberjacks won by a final score of 85-75 over the Vaqueros.
