TULSA, Okla.- The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks Volleyball Team (5-3) finished out the Tulsa Invitational against the host, Tulsa Golden Hurricane (8-1) and a familiar foe in no. 22 Arkansas (8-1). SFA took a set from the Golden Hurricanes but were unable to come away with a victory as they fell 3-1. Later in the day, the rematch of the 2023 NCAA Tournament was a similar story as Arkansas won that match 3-0.
Game 1: Tulsa 3, SFA 1
The opening set between SFA and Tulsa to kick off the Friday doubleheader for SFA saw the Ladyjacks pounce on the Hurricanes early as they exploded for an early 8-3 lead thanks to four kills from Camryn Hill, including three consecutive kills from Camryn Hill. The Hurricanes would go on a mini 3-0 run of their own and the two schools would exchange points at the midway point of the first set as SFA held a slim 13-12 lead over Tulsa. However, the Ladyjacks would start to pull away from the Hurricanes midway into the opening set with a 7-1 scoring run thanks to a pair of kills from Kyanna Creecy to pit SFA to a commanding 20-13 lead. The two schools would continue to exchange points late in the first set with SFA maintaining a steady lead of at least five points, and would ice away the win in the first set thanks to a kill from Harley Krause to secure the 25-19 opening set win for SFA.
The second set saw a more evenly matched first 12 points as SFA and Tulsa each had six points apiece early into the second set. With SFA leading 8-7, the Hurricanes went on a 6-1 scoring run to take a 13-9 lead. With the Hurricanes extending their lead to 15-10, the Ladyjacks responded promptly by roaring back with a 6-0 scoring run to reclaim the lead at 16-15. The two schools would continue to furiously exchange points as a 3-0 run by Tulsa was instantly matched with a 3-0 run by SFA to keep the score knotted at 19 points apiece. Another 3-0 scoring run by SFA put the Ladyjacks ahead 22-19 late in the second set, however, Tulsa had other plans for this one as they rattled off six straight points to end the second set and claim a 25-22 win over SFA.
The Hurricanes started the third set with the confidence they ended the second set with as they jumped out to an early 7-3 lead over the Ladyjacks. Trailing 8-3 early, the 'Jacks would go on a 5-2 scoring run thanks to a pair of kills from Caroline Kahle to trim the Tulsa lead down to 10-8. A 4-1 scoring run by the Hurricanes put them ahead 14-9, and they continued to maintain a steady lead of at least five points midway through the third set. The Ladyjacks would try to respond and mount a comeback but Tulsa had an answer for every SFA point as they held a 20-13 lead late into the third set. SFA would go on a 3-1 scoring run to trim the Tulsa lead down to 21-16, but the Hurricanes would end the third set on a 4-0 scoring run to claim a 25-16 win.
The fourth set saw Tulsa jump out to another commanding lead as they led 8-2 early over SFA. The Ladyjacks would go on a 3-1 scoring run to trim the Hurricanes lead down to five at 11-6, however, Tulsa responded with a 4-0 scoring run of their own to take a 15-6 lead midway through the fourth set. The 'Jacks would once again fight back as another 3-1 scoring run by SFA got SFA to within seven at 16-9 of Tulsa, however, a 5-1 scoring response by Tulsa launched them ahead 21-10. SFA would once again show impressive resiliency and grit as a 6-1 scoring run by SFA pulled them to within just six points of Tulsa at 22-16. Unfortunately for SFA, the Hurricanes would close the door on the potential comeback with a 3-1 scoring run to end the fourth set and claim a 25-17 win over SFA.
