Lumberjacks Fall to Mavericks in Final Game of Weekend Series

Arlington, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks lost the final game of their weekend WAC Conference series against the UT Arlington Mavericks.

The Lumberjacks were able to get off to a hot start in the first inning. Cole Hill collected his first hit of the day to put the leadoff man on for the 'Jacks in the first inning. Hill then quickly swiped his first bag of the day stealing second base setting up Brock Knoerr for a sacrifice bunt moving Hill to third base. Peyton Parker then stepped to the plate and grounded out to second base scoring Hill from third giving the Lumberjacks a 1-0 lead. The Mavericks quickly responded in the bottom of the first inning scoring a run of their own to tie the game at 1-1 after one complete inning.

After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Lumberjacks were able to extend their lead thanks to a Brock Knoerr double down the right field line scoring Cole Hill. Peyton Parker came to bat and delivered a single up the middle to score Brock Knoerr from second base. The SFA defense was able to hold UTA scoreless in the bottom of the third and after three innings the Lumberjacks led 3-1.

The Mavericks were able to hold the Lumberjacks scoreless in the top of the fourth then took the lead again in the bottom of the inning plating eight runs. After four complete innings UTA led 9-3. In the top of the fifth inning Peyton Parker collected his second hit of the game scoring Cole Hill and Tom Biggs quickly followed with a single to center field to score Parker. After five innings the Mavericks led 9-5. The Mavericks were able to respond again in the bottom of the sixth inning scoring two runs to extend their lead again to 11-5.

Tom Biggs led off the top of the seventh inning crushing his third home run of the season over the right field wall to cut into the UTA lead. After three consecutive hits the Lumberjacks had the bases loaded with no outs and Julian Thompson stepped to the plate. Thompson grounded into a double play but was able to score Nolan Brown from third base. After seven complete innings the Mavericks held the led 11-7.

Despite having 14 hits in the game the Lumberjacks fell short to the Mavericks in the Sunday matchup by a final score of 11-7.

The Lumberjacks will return to action on Tuesday, March 26th as they travel to Lubbock, Texas for a midweek game against the Red Raiders of Texas Tech. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+. You can also keep up with all the action on social media or with live stats on the SFA athletics website.
