
SFA Hosts Vaqueros in Second Matchup of the Season

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (13-9 overall, 6-5 in the WAC) return home to William R. Johnson Coliseum this Thursday, February 8th to host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros (6-16 overall, 2-9 in the WAC. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. This will be the second time this season that SFA will face UTRGV. The Lumberjacks defeated the Vaqueros 85-78 in their first conference matchup on January 4th at UTRGV.
Series History:
The Lumberjacks are 6-2 against the Vaqueros in their series history. SFA has won the last five matchups and has not lost to UTRGV since joining the WAC in the 2021 season. The first time these two teams played was December 20, 1986, and resulted in an 81-78 Lumberjack loss.
SFA defeated UTRGV 85-78 earlier this season. In a closely played second half, the Lumberjacks were trailing 73-72 with 2:19 remaining in the game. Then SFA went on a 13-5 run led by Frank Staine who scored 10 points in the final two minutes to help give the Lumberjacks the win. He put the game on ice going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the last minute of play.

The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks traveled down the road to face the Tarleton Texans. This was SFA's first road game in their last four contests. Tarleton beat SFA for the second time this season, winning 75-64 over the Lumberjacks. Stephen F. Austin fell to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in conference play.

The UTRGV Vaqueros are currently 6-16 overall and 2-19 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Vaqueros are ranked last in the WAC (11th) and 8.5 games back from the lead. They have lost their last five games with their most recent matchup ending in a 79-59 loss to Southern Utah.
In their loss to Southern Utah, the Vaqueros were led by Elijah Elliot's 18 points. UTRGV shot 18-for-67 (26.9%) from the field and 2-for-15 (13.3%) from the three-point line. Their bench posted 18 points and was led by Isaiah Barganier's nine points.
