SFA Hosts Vaqueros in Second Matchup of the Season

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks (13-9 overall, 6-5 in the WAC) return home to William R. Johnson Coliseum this Thursday, February 8th to host the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros (6-16 overall, 2-9 in the WAC. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. This will be the second time this season that SFA will face UTRGV. The Lumberjacks defeated the Vaqueros 85-78 in their first conference matchup on January 4th at UTRGV.
Series History:
The Lumberjacks are 6-2 against the Vaqueros in their series history. SFA has won the last five matchups and has not lost to UTRGV since joining the WAC in the 2021 season. The first time these two teams played was December 20, 1986, and resulted in an 81-78 Lumberjack loss.
SFA defeated UTRGV 85-78 earlier this season. In a closely played second half, the Lumberjacks were trailing 73-72 with 2:19 remaining in the game. Then SFA went on a 13-5 run led by Frank Staine who scored 10 points in the final two minutes to help give the Lumberjacks the win. He put the game on ice going 6-for-6 from the free throw line in the last minute of play.
A Look at SFA:
The Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks traveled down the road to face the Tarleton Texans. This was SFA's first road game in their last four contests. Tarleton beat SFA for the second time this season, winning 75-64 over the Lumberjacks. Stephen F. Austin fell to 13-9 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
Latrell Jossell is the Lumberjack's leading scorer with his 11.0 points per game. Jossell is shooting 41.6% from the field and 39.0% from the three-point line. He is coming off a 23-point game against Tarleton. Jossell has scored double digits in five straight games and is averaging 21.6 points in his last three games. He is ranked first in the conference (22nd NCAA) with his 89.8% free throw percentage.
The Lumberjack three-point attack is led by Latrell Jossell's 32 made three-pointers on 39.0% shooting. Frank Staine (24) and Matt Hayman (23) also have twenty made three-pointer this year for the 'Jacks. SFA also has five players shooting over 35% from behind the three-point line.

The 'Jacks are number one in bench points (34.36, 6th NCAA), first in offensive rebounding per game (12.86, 32nd NCAA), first in steals per game (9.2, 18th NCAA), and first in turnovers forced per game (17.77, 4th NCAA).

The UTRGV Vaqueros are currently 6-16 overall and 2-19 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Vaqueros are ranked last in the WAC (11th) and 8.5 games back from the lead. They have lost their last five games with their most recent matchup ending in a 79-59 loss to Southern Utah.
In their loss to Southern Utah, the Vaqueros were led by Elijah Elliot's 18 points. UTRGV shot 18-for-67 (26.9%) from the field and 2-for-15 (13.3%) from the three-point line. Their bench posted 18 points and was led by Isaiah Barganier's nine points.
UTRGV has four scorers averaging double digits. Elijah Elliot (14.8), Hasan Abdul-Hakim (13.9), Ahren Freeman (11.1), and J.J. Howard (10.1) are all double-digit scorers. The Vaqueros are averaging 73 points per game on 42.4% shooting from the field and 29.1% shooting from the three-point line.
