NACOGDOCHES, Texas- Stephen F. Austin (1-4, 0-0) hosted Northwestern State (3-4, 0-0) for their home opener in a midweek doubleheader. Game one featured an extra innings thriller that the Jacks won in walk-off fashion, while game two was a low scoring affair with the Demons winning that game.
Game 1: SFA 4, NSU 3 (9 Innings)
Alexis Telford started in the circle for the Lumberjacks and pitched lights out in the first three innings only allowing one hit. Northwestern State got on the board in the fourth inning, scoring two off Telford, 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth, SFA got their second base runner of the game after Brittany Coe doubled to left center. Lexi Benson stepped into the batter's box and hit a rocket up the middle to score Veronica Cully from second and cut the lead in half, 2-1. Neither team scored until the bottom of the sixth when Amiah Galcatcher singled through the right side, which brought Benson back up to bat with a runner on first and one out. On the first pitch of the at bat, Benson smoked a ball to the gap in left center to score Kaylee Paul from first to tie the game up at two. The Demons got two on base in the top of the seventh and had runners on the corner with two outs, but Telford fielded the final out of that half inning. In the eighth, NSU moved the runner placed on second over to third for their next batter to bring them in off a single, 3-2. The 'Jacks followed a similar plan in their half of the inning. Mikaelah Burkland was the runner placed on second and advanced to third on a sac bunt from Ellie Vance and scored the tying run off a sac fly from Madison Nguyen, 3-3. Despite the first batter of the ninth inning being walked, the Demons were unable to bring either of their base runners across home plate which left the door open for the Lumberjacks. SFA took advantage of the opportunity with Galcatcher up to bat. She lined a ball to center field that dropped which scored Arwin Callaway from second for a walk-off win, 4-3. Coach Jackson recorded his first career win at Division I in a thrilling home opener.
Three Lumberjacks recorded two hits; Coe, Galcatcher, and Benson. Benson led the team with two RBIs, followed by Coe and Galcatcher who recorded one each. In the circle, Telford pitched a complete game, allowed seven hits, two earned runs, and struck out six batters on 156 pitches.
Game 2: NSU 1, SFA 0
While the first game of the doubleheader had late-game heroics, the second game was all about the pitchers. Both pitchers only saw one base runner until the fourth inning when the Demons were able to score the lone run of the game off a RBI single. SFA loaded up the bases in the bottom of the sixth after Vance and Nguyen singled and Coe was walked. Benson, who already drove in two runs, tried to get someone across home plate to tie up the game but the NSU shortstop got the force out on Nguyen at third.
Vance and Nguyen each recorded a hit for the 'Jacks. Aydenne Brown pitched a complete game, allowed four hits, one run, and struck out four batters on 110 pitches.
The Lumberjacks will head down to Corpus Christi for a three-game weekend series against the Islanders of TAMUCC. The series begins with a doubleheader on Saturday, February 17th at 12:00 p.m. followed by game two at 2:30 p.m.
