'Jacks Drop Doubleheader Against Islanders

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas- Stephen F. Austin (1-6, 0-0) hit the road to Corpus Christi for a series against the Islanders (5-2, 0-0) beginning with a doubleheader late Saturday afternoon.
Game 1: TAMUCC 2, SFA 0
Brooke Gainous started in the circle for the Lumberjacks for the first game of the doubleheader. The Islanders got on the board first with an RBI double, 1-0. SFA's first ht of the game came in the top of the third with back-to-back singles from Ellie Vance and Madison Nguyen. Amiah Galcatcher also hit a single in the top of the fourth, but all were stranded on the bases. TAMUCC was able to tack on an insurance run in the sixth inning to extend their lead to two.
In addition to Vance, Nguyen, and Galcatcher's hits, four 'Jacks were able to get on base via walks; Brittany Coe, Kelby Robbins, Hope Lusk and Mikaelah Burkland. Gainous pitched all six innings for SFA and allowed six hits, two runs, and struck out four batters.
Game 2: TAMUCC 4, SFA 2
SFA jumped on their bats in the second game as Nguyen recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the first. The 'Jacks also recorded the first run of the game when Mallory Webb reached first on an error by the pitcher which scored Veronica Cully from third. Cully pinch ran for Kelby Robbins who hit a double to right center earlier in the inning. The Islanders scored three at the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead. Robbins got the 'Jacks comeback going in the fourth after recording her second hit of the game. Chloe Reneau and Webb both hit singles to load the bases up for Emily Land. Land hit the 'Jacks fourth single of the inning and drove in Robbins from third to cut the lead down to one, 3-2. TAMUCC scored their final run of the game off a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Robbins led the 'Jacks offense with two hits followed by Nguyen, Reneau, Webb, and Land who each recorded one. Aydenne Brown started in the circle for SFA. She pitched 2.2 innings, allowed four hits, three runs and struck out one batter. Kayla Palomino and Deliah Robles came on in relief to pitch the remaining 3.1 innings.
The 'Jacks will be back in action for the final game of the series with the Islanders tomorrow, Sunday February 18th at 11:00 a.m.
