
Lumberjacks Secure 12th Southland Regular Season Title with a 5-0 Win Over the Lady Demons

NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin soccer team (11-3-2, 8-2-0 SLC) looked to secure the 2024 Southland Regular Season Title at home Friday night against the Northwestern State Lady Demons (10-7-2, 6-3-1 SLC).
Both teams were evenly matched throughout most of the first half as both defenses and keepers did not allow many scoring chances. The first goal of the match came in the 39th minute off of a penalty kick that was award to the 'Jacks off of a Lady Demon handball in the box. Ava Shannon buried the penalty kick in the bottom right corner of the goal to give the 'Jacks a 1-0 lead. At halftime the score stood at 1-0 in favor of SFA.
In the 64th minute, the 'Jacks brought the pressure as Kamryn Jiles brought the ball up the right side prepared to cross it into Maddie Bowers. Jiles' pass found the far goal post and bounced into the net for her sixth goal of the season, 2-0. Ten minutes later, Shannon crossed the ball into the 18-yard box for Bowers to head it towards the NSU keeper who kept it out of the net but the ball stayed alive in the box for Caelynn January to bury her second goal of the season off the rebound, 3-0. Bowers continued the offensive pressure as she drove the offense up the left side in the 87th minute where she passed the ball into the 18-yard box to the foot of Jiles who settled it and spun around to net her second goal of the game, 4-0. Two minutes later the 'Jacks found the back of the net again as Jiles found herself in the 18-yard box again with possession, but she was able to find Brielle Buchanan who smoked one to the top right corner of the goal past the NSU keeper, 5-0. SFA once again outshot their opponent 25-10 with 11 shots on goal and the defense recorded their 10th shutout of the season.
