NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Women's Soccer (11-3-2, 8-2-0) begins their quest for the Southland Conference Championship on Tuesday morning when they square off with former WAC opponent UTRGV Vaqueros (7-6-5, 3-3-4).
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks capped off their incredible 2024 season on Friday when they claimed a commanding 5-0 win over Northwestern State to secure their 12th Southland Conference Regular Season Title in school history. The Lumberjacks ended the season on a three-game winning streak to help boost them into first place in the Southland and will begin the Southland Conference Tournament as the number one seed just one year after finishing with just two wins. SFA posted an 8-2 conference record and recorded only three losses all season, with all three losses being by just one goal while all 11 of their wins came by multiple goals. The Lumberjacks now take aim at claiming their fourth Southland tournament championship in school history.
Vaqueros at a Glance:
The UTRGV Vaqueros are no stranger to SFA as these two teams were in the WAC together last season, as the Vaqueros will enter the Southland tournament as the number eight seed. UTRGV will be looking to get back in the win column and upset SFA as they have lost their last three matches and will carry a 7-6-5 overall record into Tuesday while finishing the year with a 3-3-4 conference record.
Scouting Report:
An impressive seven Lumberjacks were named to the First Team All-Southland Team while five Lumberjacks earned Southland superlatives and perhaps most deserving of all, Head Coach Ben Williams was named Southland Coach of the Year in his first year at the helm of the Lumberjack soccer program. Alex Bayouth was named Freshman of the year, Ava Shannon was named Midfielder of the Year, and Ella Morgan was named Defensive Player of the Year while all three along with Maddie Bowers, Jayme Bailey, Brielle Buchanan, Avery Brandt, and Hadley Williams were all named to the First Team All-Southland while Sawyer Kohutek was named to the Second Team All-Southland.
Savannah Frisby leads the Vaqueros offense as she tallied a team-high seven goals along with 15 points this season. However, Frisby was not alone on offense as Linnea Eld, Lisa Elowsson, Abbie Bailey, and Jordan Matthews all netted three goals apiece for the Vaqueros as well. Rosie Train dished out a team-leading six assists, while Heiddis Sigurdardottir and Kamila Aguilar combined for 45 saves in net for UTRGV.
Series:
Tuesday morning's win-or-go home matchup will feature the sixth all-time meeting between these two teams with SFA leading the all-time series 4-0-1. These two schools met almost exactly one month ago in October where SFA claimed a 4-1 victory over UTRGV on the road.j
