NACOGDOCHES, Texas- The Stephen F. Austin Women's Soccer (10-3-2, 7-2-0) close out their 2024 regular season at home with plenty at stake as they will host the visiting Northwestern State Lady Demons (10-6-2, 6-2-1) with the winner being crowned the Southland Conference Regular Season champion.
Lumberjacks at a Glance:
The Lumberjacks return home to close out their 2024 campaign as they look to put the cherry on top of their expectation defying season by being crowned Southland Champions for the 12th time in program history. Thanks to a pair of 3-0 wins over McNeese and Nicholls the last two times out for SFA, the Lumberjacks have found themselves back in sole possession of first place in the Southland with just one game to play. The Lumberjacks have accumulated 21 points in conference play this season thanks to a Southland best 7-2 conference record, while their three losses are the fewest of any team in the Southland. SFA will return home to the friendly confines of the Chopping Block where they have posted a 5-1 home record and have scored 31 goals as a team. The SFA offense kept their foot on the gas last weekend as they combined for 46 shots over their two wins at McNeese and Nicholls as they have now totaled double-digit shots in every game this season, while their defense has been just as exceptional by only allowing double-digit shots twice this year.
Lady Demons at a Glance:
The Northwestern State Lady Demons travel to the Pineywoods to close out their 2024 season looking to also leave with a Southland Conference Regular Season Championship to their name. The Lady Demons will carry a three-game winning streak into Friday night's match that most recently saw them claim a 3-1 win over the UTRGV Vaqueros. Northwestern State has recorded 19 points this season and with a win would claim first place over SFA as they have posted a 6-2-1 conference record and at one point this year held a seven-game winning streak.
Scouting Report:
Jayme Bailey and Maddie Bowers continue to be the backbone of the Ladyjacks offense as both have tallied 20 points this season. Bailey leads the Lumberjacks with her eight goals, while Bowers has dished out a team-leading eight assists of her own. However, the Lumberjack offense has been spread out all season as Reaganne Crane, Brielle Buchanan, Kamryn Jiles, and Ava Shannon all have posted five or more goals this season as well. Meanwhile in net, Sierra McCluer and Lydia Sattler continue to anchor down the goalie spot for SFA as they have combined for 37 saves, allowing only eight goals, and posting a sparking 0.53 GAA this season.
Taylor Spitzer has been all over for the Lady Demons on offense as she leads the team with 18 points thanks to six goals and six assists. Emily Senatore has formed a solid duo with Spitzer as she has netted eight goals of her own, while Isabella Ruggiano rounds out the top scorers for Northwestern State with her five assists. Libe Banuelos has held down the goalie spot all season for the Lady Demons as she has recorded 79 saves, four shutouts, and nine wins in net for Northwestern State.
Series:
Friday evening's high-stake matchup will feature the 35th all-time meeting between these two Southland rivals with arguably the highest stakes of the entire series on the line. SFA leads the all-time series 21-8-5, however, the Lady Demons have won the previous two matchups between the two schools including their last meeting in 2021 when they claimed a 3-1 home win over SFA.
