EDINBURG, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin men's basketball program is looking to straighten the ship this Saturday, get back in the win column, and get the brooms out against the Vaqueros in the 2022-2023 season.
Lumberjacks Statistical Analysis
SFA has fallen to a three-way tie for fourth in the WAC standings with Sam Houston and Grand Canyon after suffering back-to-back losses. Since both the Bearkats and the Lopes have better overall records, the Lumberjacks are placed sixth overall for the time being.
The Lumberjacks remain one of the two best teams in the country when it comes to turnovers forced per game, now sitting at 18.83, 0.21 behind the nation's new leader Morgan State. The 'Jack's steals leader, AJ Cajuste (39), looks to lead SFA back to the top spot in that statistical category and create havoc for the Vaqueros.
Latrell Jossell's all-star performance from the beyond the arc as of late has pushed the Lumberjacks into the top five in the nation in three-point percentage. Jossell has made 11 of his last 17 three-point attempts and bumps up his percentage from deep to 44.4%, which leads the conference and puts him at 12th best in the country. The Lumberjacks as a whole shoots 39.4% from beyond the arc and is 2.0% behind the nation leader Utah State.
A Look at the Vaqueros
UTRGV remains near the bottom of the WAC standings with a 3-9 conference record and a 12-13 overall record. They look to use their home court to their advantage as they are 10-4 in home games this year.
The Vaqueros are still best team in the country when it comes to drawing fouls leading to free-throws. They're number one in the country in free-throw attempts per game with 25.8 and second in the country in free-throws made per game with 18.0. The Lumberjacks need to take caution when playing defense against the Vaqueros, as one bad touch in the paint could result in two points for UTRGV.
Justin Johnson is the one player the 'Jacks need to play most carefully around as he ranks second in the nation in free-throw attempts and sixth in the nation in free-throws made. Johnson is 143-for-210 (68.1%) from the charity line. He's also one of the most dangerous players for the Vaqueros as a whole as he leads the team with 20.5 points per game and is 173-for-383 from the field (45.2%), which is the most points and most shots in the conference.
Will Johnston is another key offensive player for the Vaqueros, especially when it comes to beyond the arc. Johnston is 51-for-119 (42.9%) from deep and is the most effective free-throw shooter, being 97-for-115 (84.3%) from the line. He averages 14.5 points per game and leads the team with 92 assists.
Dima Zdor (6'10) will be a problem in the paint for the Lumberjacks as he has the best field goal percentage on the team with 56.3%, most of his shots coming from the paint. Zdor also leads the team with 37 blocks.
