
Lumberjacks Light up Vaqueros in 83-66 Win

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated University of Texas Rio Grande Valley 83-66 to get back on the win column. The Lumberjacks improve to 14-7 (WAC 6-2) and the Vaqueros fall to 10-11 (WAC 1-7).
It was a strong defensive first half for the Lumberjacks, not letting the Vaqueros score in the opening 2 minutes and 45 seconds. The 'Jacks opened the game with a dominant first nine minutes, getting the early lead 18-4. The Vaqueros struggled to make any baskets in the first ten minutes only making two shots on 16 attempts. However, as the half went on, they picked up the offense and went on a 14-4 run, getting their deficit down to four. The Lumberjacks responded and finished the last 3:45 with a 10-4 run and went into half with a comfortable ten-point lead at 32-22. The SFA defense played a big role in the first half, forcing 13 turnovers and recording nine steals. Their PressU defense slowed down the Vaqueros offense, as they only made seven shots on 27 attempts from the field.
The Lumberjacks offense heavily improved in the second half, scoring 51 points and going 16-for-27 from the field. Their field goal percentage went from 33.3% in the first half to 59.3% in the second half. They also made three more three-pointers in the second half on the same amount of attempts. Kyle Hayman was on fire in the second half and dropped 12 points, leading the team with 14 points on the day. One of four 'Jacks to hit double-digit points.
The Lumberjack's bench played a huge role in tonight's offense, with 55 of the 83 points coming from the bench. Three of the four double-digit scorers came off the bench. The 'Jack's bench outscored the Vaquero's 55-22.
Hayman lead the SFA score sheet and also picked up four rebounds, an assist, and two steals. Sadaidriene Hall followed Hayman with 13 points, three rebounds, an assist, and three steals. Nigel Hawkins was next line with 12 points of his own along with five rebounds and two assists. Nana Antwi-Boasiako picked up his first double-digit scoring outing in five matches with 11 points as well as four rebounds, three assists, and a steal.
Along with bench points, SFA lead UTRGV in: field goal percentage (45.0-38.5), three-point percentage (35.7-35.3), turnovers forced (25-18), fastbreak points (18-16), steals (14-7), points off turnovers (29-14), points in the paint (40-28), second chance points (15-8).
Stephen F. Austin now prepares for their biggest match of the year which comes against Seattle University, the last team currently undefeated in WAC action. The Lumberjacks look to cram the coliseum and make some noise against their strong WAC rival this Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
