NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin defeated Seattle University 79-65 and takes down one of the top teams in the WAC. The Lumberjacks improve to 15-7 (WAC 7-2) and the Redhawks fall to 16-6 (WAC 7-2).
It was a much needed dominant victory for the Lumberjacks to get back the winning streak and reclaim their spot as one of the top teams in the WAC. It took two and half minutes for anyone to put any points on the board, but momentum eventually swung the 'Jack's way and they started off with a 10-3 run, thanks to some quick three's from Latrell Jossell and Jaylin Jackson-Posey. From there the Redhawks slowly clawed their way back and got the lead for a split moment, right before the Lumberjacks finished the last five minutes of the half with a 15-4 run and entered the half a 38-32 lead. In the half, Nigel Hawkins already posted nine points and nine rebounds. SFA as a whole went four-for-six beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes.
The second half was all Lumberjacks as they held the lead all through the half and didn't allow the Redhawks to get any major runs going. Within the first ten minutes of the second half, the 'Jacks went on a 14-4 run to grow their lead to double-digits. With roughly five minutes to go, Jossell hit a major three-pointer that got the whole crowd and bench up and roaring after having a questionable call by the referee go against him. It was the loudest this Coliseum has been all season long. The defense locked up from deep and didn't allow the Redhawks to make a single three-pointer in 12 attempts in the second half. The Lumberjacks finished the game making majority of their shots in the second half (15-for-26) and capped off one of their best team performances of the season.
Sadaidriene Hall and Nigel Hawkins both put together amazing games that resulted in a double-double for both of the players. Hall finished up with 15 points and ten rebounds, while Hawkins posted ten points and 12 rebounds. Jossell had one of his best performances beyond the arc tonight, going four-for-six from deep and tying Hall with the most points on the night with 15. Roti Ware had another solid outing going five-for-seven on the field with two three-pointers, equaling out 12 points on the game. AJ Cajuste was two points away from being the third double-double on the team, as he recorded eight points and ten assists.
The Lumberjacks had an overall great team performance as they led the Redhawks in: field goal percentage (53.4-37.1), three-point percentage (53.3-18.2), free-throw percentage (56.3-52.9), rebounds (43-37), assists (18-11), bench points (35-26), blocks (4-2), and fastbreak points (13-6).
The 'Jacks now hit the road for a couple of weeks as they take on New Mexico State on Wednesday, February 1st at 8:00 p.m. looking to keep the hot streak going.
