SFA Takes Down Mississippi Valley and Southern Miss to Remain Undefeated

HATTIESBURG, Miss.- Stephen F. Austin defeated Mississippi Valley State University (3-0) and Southern Mississippi (3-2) and improve to 9-0 on the season.
In the first game against MVSU, SFA swept the sets winning the first set by a score of 25-5, then the second set 25-12, and the final set 25-6. The Ladyjacks had 35 kills, 30 assists, 12 aces, 37 digs and four blocks in this game. Ielan Bradley was a perfect 9-9 in this game with a 1.000 hitting percentage and was one kill away from breaking the school record for highest hitting percentage in a single match. Hailey Hunt followed Bradley with a .538 hitting percentage and seven kills. Two-time and reigning WAC Defensive Player of the Week, Haley Hoang once again led SFA with nine digs, she also led the team with four aces. Jayden Flynn and Maddy Bourque led the Ladyjacks with 13 and eight assists, respectively.
In the primetime game against host USM, the Ladyjacks won the first two sets (33-31, 25-22), but then the Golden Eagles came roaring back to win sets three and four (25-19, 25-17). In the fifth set, the points went back-and-forth with neither team having a larger lead than two points including the final two points that SFA won to win the set, 15-13. Leah Powell led the offensive attack with a career-high 20 kills and she recorded a double-double with 11 digs in this game. Bradley recorded 13 kills and two blocks. Bourque and Flynn continued to rack up the assists with 26 and 21 assists, respectively. Flynn also recorded a double-double with the 21 assists and 19 digs in this game. Hoang led SFA's defensive effort with 22 digs which brings her season total to 178 digs.
SFA will be back in action for Day 2 of the USM Invitational as they face off against Houston Baptist at 12 p.m. on Saturday, September 10th.
