Cerdan and Tiboldi notch singles wins to push SFA to victory
SAN ANTONIO - Facing off against a short-handed Incarnate Word squad, the SFA tennis team got all it could handle but at the end of the day the Ladyjacks were able to lock down a 4-3 Southland Conference victory over the Cardinals at the Mabry Tennis Center Friday afternoon.
The win was SFA's second-straight as the Ladyjacks moved back to the .500 mark on the year. SFA also rose to 2-1 in Southland Conference play with the victory. With the triumph, SFA matched both its overall win total and its Southland win total from 2018.
DOUBLES
• Gabi Guilarte and Kaja Ljubic continued their strong start in Southland doubles action, securing a 6-3 victory over Victoria Kareh and Brandelyn Fulgenzi on the top line.
• After the number-one line win that moved Guilarte and Ljubic to 2-1 in Southland doubles action, Armelle Cerdan and Darinka Tiboldi clinched the doubles point for SFA with a 6-4 victory over Alejandra Landaluce and Alejandra Tamayo on line three.
SINGLES
• Competing with just five singles players, Incarnate Word ceded the sixth-line match to the Ladyjacks which handed SFA a 2-0 lead.
• The other two points did not come easy, however, as the Cardinals captured three of the remaining five singles matches to put SFA's victory in jeopardy.
• Fortunately, Tiboldi and Cerdan were up to the task of leading SFA to victory. After notching a 6-3 set one win over Kareh on the second line, Tiboldi was forced to go to a third frame after Kareh knotted things up with a 6-1 triumph in the middle frame.
• Tiboldi made all the right moves in crunch time, though, scoring a 7-5 win over Kareh to give the Ladyjacks another team point.
• Much like Tiboldi, Cerdan appeared well on her way to cruising to a singles win with a 6-0 win over Landaluce in set one on line four. Landaluce, however, forced a third set with a 6-1 victory in the middle frame. Just like Tiboldi, however, Cerdan had the last laugh in the third frame. The junior sewed up her singles win - and the match victory for SFA - with a 6-3 win in set three.
• Tiboldi stayed perfect in Southland Conference play, improving her 2019 record to 3-0. Cerdan moved up to 2-1 in Southland singles play with her win.
COMING UP NEXT
• The Ladyjacks take aim at their first three-game Southland Conference winning streak since 2016 when they head to Abilene, Texas, for a Sunday afternoon clash at Abilene Christian. First serve is set for 1:00 p.m.
