Miller spent freshman seasons at Incarnate Word
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Thursday afternoon, SFA director of volleyball and head indoor volleyball coach Debbie Humphreys announced the addition of junior defensive specialist/libero Madelynn Miller to the Ladyjacks' roster.
Miller, who spent her first two seasons in San Antonio, Texas, playing for another Southland Conference program at Incarnate Word, joins eight other newcomers who will slip on SFA jerseys for the first time in the fall of 2019.
Madelynn Miller | Jr. | DS/L | 5-3 | Lorena, Texas | Lorena HS/Incarnate Word
In her first collegiate go-around, Miller put on an Incarnate Word jersey and immediately became the Cardinals' go-to option at libero. As a freshman, Miller racked up a team-best 406 digs to become the first UIW player since 2012 to record at least 400 in a season. Highlighting her inaugural collegiate campaign were a pair of 30+ dig efforts against both McNeese (31) and Sam Houston State (30). Those showings helped her finish the season as the team's leader in digs per set (4.6).
Continuing her strong back-row play as a sophomore, Miller once again led the team in both digs (418) and digs per set (4.49).
In all, Miller put forth 20 double-digit dig efforts throughout the 2018 season. Included in those were seven outings of 20 or more digs as well as a season-high 39 in a five-set Southland setback at Houston Baptist (Feb. 6). Miller was also relied on as a strong service threat and racked up 18 aces throughout the year.
A standout prep volleyball player, Miller collected District 17-4A MVP, Super Centex Defensive Player of the Year, TSWA Second Team and All-State throughout her playing days at Lorena High School. In addition to her on-court accolades, Miller was a standout in the classroom, too, earning Academic All-District and Academic All-State honors as a high school player.
Humphreys on Miller | "Maddie is someone we have known for quite a while and we certainly had to game-plan specifically for her when she was on the other side of the net. We are excited to have her join the SFA volleyball family. Not only did we get a very good volleyball player, who makes our ball control stronger, but we also got a high-quality person which is just as important. We expect Maddie to have a strong finish to her collegiate career."
The Ladyjacks are coming off one of their best seasons in program history. SFA established new program records in wins and winning percentage by posting a 32-3 record in 2018. Through the year, SFA reeled off a program-record 29 consecutive wins which included a perfect 16-0 run through the Southland Conference which yielded the program's 10th regular season crown.
The last three matches of that 29-match winning streak came in the Southland Conference Tournament where the top-seeded Ladyjacks captured the program's first league tournament crown sine 2006 in order to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in program history.
