Cerdan comes back to win after dropping first set
SAN ANTONIO - Armelle Cerdan bounced back after dropping her first set in singles action to win her one-on-one match and Gabi Guilarte posted a triumph in top-flight singles but the SFA tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at UTSA Saturday afternoon.
In doubles play, Cerdan teamed with Vera Carvalho to take down Mariah Plauth and Laura Cabrera 6-4 on the number-three line. That staked SFA to an early advantage in tandem play, but the Roadrunners were able to gut out 6-4 victories in the first and second flights to notch the doubles point. That gave the home team a lead it wouldn't relinquish for the rest of the afternoon.
UTSA's lead increased to 2-0 after Kaja Ljubic fell 6-3, 6-3 to Plauth in third-flight singles action. Though the Ladyjacks never led after that, the rest of the singles matches could all have gone either way. Guilarte narrowed the gap with her 7-5, 6-4 victory against Jasmin Starr and on the number five singles line Nida Kamal dropped a narrow three-set (6-7, 6-2, 1-0) showdown with Catalina Cabrique.
Darinka Tiboldi went toe-to-toe-with Cabrera in number-two singles play before ultimately falling 7-5, 6-2. In the sixth singles flight, Vera Carvalho won six games against Sophie Omoworare but fell 6-3, 6-3.
Cerdan's come-from-behind singles win came at the expense of Kylee Kato. SFA's junior dropped set one 6-4 but won each of the next two frames by tallies of 6-2 and 7-6 to wrap things up.
SFA ends its five-match road stretch to begin the season Sunday in San Marcos, Texas, when the Ladyjacks take on Sun Belt Conference adversary Texas State. First serve is set for noon at the Bobcat Tennis Complex.
