Daron pounds down career-high 16 kills as SFA snaps two-match skid
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Fueled by a career-high 16 kills from junior middle blocker Danae Daron and an 12-kill, 13-dig double-double by senior outside hitter Haley Coleman, the SFA volleyball team put an end to a two-match skid by topping host Colgate 3-1 in the final match of the Ellis Rowland Memorial Invitational Saturday night.
Junior setter Ann Hollas also turned in a double-double with 32 assists and 13 digs for SFA who improved to 3-0 all-time against the Raiders.
SET ONE | SFA 25, Colgate 20
• Showing off their prowess from the service line early on, the Ladyjacks took control of the opening set with a 9-4 run that featured two aces from senior McKenzie Brewer and another rom Hollas.
• Though the Ladyjacks never trailed in the frame, Colgate did manage to make things interesting midway through the frame with a sizable run of its own. Alex Stein punched down a pair of kills during a 6-1 surge by the Raiders that cut SFA's lead to 14-13.
• The Raiders continued to press the issue, eventually tying things up at 18-all when Coleman committed an attack error.
• SFA, however, made all the right moves down the stretch to win their second consecutive opening set. Three unforced errors by Colgate, a combination block by Corin Evans and Anyia Williams and kills off the hands of Daron, Hollas and Brewer made up a 7-2 run by the visitors to claim the set.
• Both teams hit below .200, but SFA edged Colgate by attacking at a clip of .171 compared to the Raiders' percentage of .146.
SET TWO | Colgate 25, SFA 19
• Things continued to hum along at a good pace for the Ladyjacks early on as Daron and Makenzee Hanna shot down back-to-back kills to start the set before the Raiders took control.
• Colgate embarked on an 11-2 run powered by six kills and a pair of blocks to open up an 11-4 advantage.
• The Raiders employed another spurt, this one of the 5-0 variety, to go up 16-7. Though SFA responded with a 7-1 surge of its own to cut the Raiders' lead to 17-14 the deficit was just too much to overcome
• SFA hit .190 in the set while Colgate operated at a rate of .262 on offense in order to knot things at one set apiece.
SET THREE | SFA 27, Colgate 25
• Perhaps the most dramatic frame of the battle, SFA found itself forced to stave off a set point try by the Raiders in order to open up a 2-1 lead.
• Four players - Coleman, Daron, Hanna and Anyia Williams - smashed down kills during the Ladyjacks' 9-5 run to start the frame.
• SFA maintained its lead through the majority of the set and found itself leading 21-16 following a Coleman termination that capped a 3-0 run before Colgate made a bid for its first lead of the match.
• Four players turned in kill and Peighton McRobie ended an 8-2 Colgate run with one of her three service aces in order to put the home team ahead 24-23.
• Staring at a 2-1 deficit, the Ladyjacks went back to Coleman and Daron who combined for three kills during the Ladyjacks' 4-1 run to end the frame. A bad set by Colgate proved to be the final point SFA needed to regain the lead for good.
• The Ladyjacks countered a 17-kill attack by Colgate with 18 terminations of their own.
SET FOUR | SFA 25, Colgate 22
• Just 25 points from victory, the Ladyjacks' offense peaked in the fourth set by generating 18 kills on a .288 attack percentage to finish off the Raiders.
• SFA broke a 4-4 tie by string together four straight points. Two of those tallies were kills from Hollas while Anyia Williams added a termination of her own that upped the Ladyjacks' lead to 8-4.
• Another 4-0 Ladyjack run, this one finished off with a Peyton Redmond service ace, made matters 15-9 and SFA would need every points of that cushion in order to hold off the Raiders.
• Colgate won five of six points late, trimming the SFA advantage to 20-19 after a termination from Stein. The lead remained at one after the teams swapped points before Daron asserted herself and pushed SFA to the finish line.
• The junior keyed a 4-2 run to finish the match by pounding down two kills while Hanna and Coleman each added one of their own to end things.
