SFA completes 2018 recruiting class with addition of four Texas standouts
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Stephen F. Austin volleyball coach Debbie Humphreys completed her five-member 2018 class Wednesday afternoon by announcing the addition of four student-athletes who will join the program in the fall.
Each of the incoming student-athletes hail from the state of Texas and represented in the group are a defensive specialist, a libero, a middle blocker and a right side. They join Emery Judkins who inked her National Letter of Intent to join SFA's team back in November of 2017.
Mari Torres | 5-7 | Lib. | Pearland, Texas | Dawson HS | Club Team • AVA
Few in the state compiled a volleyball résumé as extensive as Mari Torres did through her prep career at Dawson High School. At the conclusion of her high school playing days, the libero had earned a pair of TAVC All-State selections as well as an additional TGCA All-State nod. A defensive standout, Torres claimed GHVCA Defensive Player of the Year as well as District Defensive Player of the Year honors to go along with her trio of First Team All-District awards. With Torres in the back row, Dawson High School made a run to the regional semifinals of the UIL 6A tournament and finished its 2017 season with a 31-4 record. A standout in the classroom as well, Torres collected a pair of Academic All-District citations which complimented her status as a TGCA Academic All-State choice.
What they're saying about Torres
Debbie Humphreys | Head Coach | SFA | "Mari is a true volleyball player with tremendous all-around skills and exceptional ball control. She understands the game and has the leadership qualities you want in a libero. We are excited to have her and we expect her transition to DI volleyball to happen quickly."
Sabrina Monaco | 5-7 | DS | Southlake, Texas | Carroll Senior HS | Club Team • Texas Image
One of the latest in a long line of standout back row players who chose SFA following high school, Monaco served as a dependable defensive player as well as a dangerous server throughout her days at Carroll Senior High School. No player on the CSHS squad accumulated more digs or service aces than Monaco who earned the title of team MVP after leading her squad to a district title. In addition to her First Team All-District award, Monaco excelled in the classroom as the National Honor Society member collected four Academic All-District Awards. On the club scene she starred as the libero for a number of highly successful club squads for a five-year span.
What they're saying about Monaco
Debbie Humphreys | Head Coach | SFA | "Sabrina is a very mature player with great ball control skills. She will help solidify our DS core and bring a tremendous work ethic with her."
Neena Perdue | 5-11 | MB | Keller, Texas | Westlake Academy | Club Team • TAV
The owner of an extensive list of individual and team accomplishments from her tenure at Westlake Academy, Perdue never failed to win a state title during her prep career. A four-time TCAF State Champion, Perdue was named to the TCAF State All-Tournament Team in each of Westlake's four state title runs. On two occasions she was named the TCAF State Tournament MVP for her play. Perdue's lengthy list of accolades also includes three First Team All-State choices and another trio of First Team All-District selections to go along with four TCAF All-Star appearances. In one of those All-Star games she was named the MVP and her volleyball prowess extended beyond Westlake Academy, too, as she won a silver medal in the 17U USA Division of USA Volleyball.
What they're saying about Perdue
Debbie Humphreys | Head Coach | SFA | "Neena understands the game very well and is a strong blocker. As she gets in the weight room, she will develop the strength needed to be a high level attacking middle as well. It is going to be fun watching her develop."
Raeley Crosley | 6-0 | RS | Kennedale, Texas | Kennedale HS | Club Team • TAV
As a member of the Kennedale High School squad, Crosley took home such individual awards as First Team All-District, District Blocker of the Year and District MVP through her pre-collegiate career. A frequent selection for All-Tournament Teams throughout high school, the Academic All-District choice also earned third and fifth-place finishes in the USA division of USA volleyball nationals.
What they're saying about Crosley
Debbie Humphreys | Head Coach | SFA | "Rae is an intense competitor who loves to win. She has a positive energizing presence that is contagious. She gets the game and we expect her to improve at a fast rate once she is challenged at a high level on a daily basis. It is going to be lots of fun to see what Raeley is capable of because she is a winner."
