Ladyjacks Defeat Prairie View A&M 9-2 in 2018 Home Debut

SFA tallies nine hits and scores nine runs in home opening rout of Lady Panthers
"It was great to play at home on our field," head coach Nicole Dickson said following the win. "We had an awesome turnout, there were a lot of fans out here today. Our player were really excited about that and I think we are going to have an even better turnout this weekend."
Visiting Prairie View A&M pounced first, scoring an unearned run off of a Ladyjack fielding error with two outs in the top of the opening inning. However, SFA responded in the bottom of the first frame with a sacrifice fly from senior right fielder Autumn Holloway (Cypress, Texas), which scored freshman second baseman Bryana Novegil (Houston, Texas), and an RBI single up the middle by senior third baseman Amber Landry (Ponchatoula, La.). With the two-run first inning, the Ladyjacks took a 2-1 lead as senior Callee Guffey (Waco, Texas) racked up five strikeouts in the circle through the first two innings.
An RBI double to right center field from first baseman Laurisa Hernandez in the top of the third knotted up the game for a second time at 2-2. That tie would be short lived though as junior first baseman Margarita Corona (Tucson, Ariz.) crushed her second homer of the season in the bottom of the third, this time over the center field fence to give the Ladyjacks a 3-2 advantage.
The Ladyjacks saw their biggest inning of the afternoon come in the fourth when Novegil doubled to right center for an RBI, allowing freshman left fielder Katherine Thompson (Spring, Texas) to reach home, before both Holloway and Novegil scored unearned runs on a Lady Panther fielding error. The three-run frame put SFA ahead 6-2 and the Ladyjacks never looked back.
Junior center fielder Courtney Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded a sacrifice fly in the fifth to give SFA a 7-2 lead, before a Landry RBI ground out scored Novegil once again in the sixth. Senior catcher Taylor Fraccastoro (Orange, Texas) scored the Ladyjacks' final run of the game when she reached home from third on a Prairie View A&M throwing error with two outs in the bottom sixth, making it 9-2.
"It was an awesome start; the girls did what they needed to do," coach Dickson continued. "That team (Prairie View A&M), pitching wise, was average but they had some players who were really swinging the bats and really swinging hard. They also had some speed and their top five players were putting the ball in play and making some things happen. I thought Callee (Guffey) had a really good outing, she was able to get some confidence and threw really well. Clarissa Hernandez once again came in and shut things down. Bryana Novegil, once again, did an excellent job at the top and Autumn Holloway had a big day with a hard, line drive in the gap, it was good for her to gain some confidence going into the weekend."
Novegil completed the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk, three runs scored and an RBI, while Holloway went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Fraccastoro finished with two scores as Guffey (3-3) nearly went the distance and struck out a season-high tying six in six innings of work. Freshman Clarissa Hernandez (San Antonio, Texas) tossed one inning in relief, retiring three straight and notching two strikeouts.
Prairie View A&M's Laurisa Hernandez went 2-for-3 in the game with the Lady Panthers' lone RBI, while right-hander Vannessa Castro (1-5) took the loss after going the first three innings and striking out just one.
