SFA lines eight hits, strikes out eight batters and holds Southern to just four hits to collect second win of weekend
HOUSTON – In its final game at the University of Houston's Red & White Showcase Sunday morning, the Stephen F. Austin softball team earned a 7-0 shutout over the Southwestern Athletic Conference's Southern University. In their final non-conference weekend contest of the season at Cougar Softball Stadium, the Ladyjacks (9-9) proved to be strong in all facets of the game, lacing eight hits, striking out eight batters, committing no errors and leaving just two base runners stranded.
"It was a really good day, we put everything together," head coach Nicole Dickson said after the win. "We had really solid pitching from both (Autumn) Anderson and Jordan (Llinas) and offensively, we did a good job with situational hitting. We moved runners, put some bunts down and did a good job executing. We played the way we have to play softball. We don't have any All-American superstars so we have to play as a team and one unit to truly make stuff happen."
"I thought our seniors did a good job setting the tone," coach Dickson continued. "They really took some accountability and ownership going into today and they stepped up their game. Because the seniors took it upon themselves to be better, I feel like they pushed our team to be a little bit better today. We had a great performance from Madison Selman, that kid played really hard all game and she was a spark plug for us on the infield. I really liked her energy and I thought Jordan (Llinas) did a really good job of attacking the zone and mixing speeds."
SFA held the Jaguars to just four hits in the seven innings and forced Southern to strand nine base runners. The Ladyjacks also benefited from a trio of Jaguar errors and used a three-run fourth inning to put the game out of reach.
Getting the bats going early, SFA scored two runs on three hits in the opening inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Following a single by freshman second baseman Bryana Novegil (Houston, Texas) and a double to the outfield by senior third baseman Amber Landry (Ponchatoula, La.), senior catcher Taylor Fraccastoro (Orange, Texas) smacked a two RBI double to left field.
After an inning and a half of scoreless play, Landry earned an RBI on a ground out to first base, the run coming unearned due to a previous Jaguar error. A big fourth inning led to three more Ladyjack runs and gave SFA a commanding 6-0 advantage. The Ladyjacks scored the three runs on three hits, getting the first on an RBI single to right center field from freshman left fielder Katherine Thompson (Spring, Texas). Following a single down the left field line by freshman shortstop Emily Evans (Santa Fe, Texas), Novegil drew an RBI walk with bases loaded to score Thompson. SFA's final run of the inning came on a senior right fielder Autumn Holloway (Cypress, Texas) sacrifice fly to left field that allowed senior first baseman Madison Selman (Lufkin, Teas) to reach home.
The Ladyjacks added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth after junior center fielder Courtney Brown (Tucson, Ariz.) doubled to right field and then scored when Selman reached on a Southern muffed throw for an RBI.
Novegil finished 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored, an RBI and a walk, while Fraccastoro went 1-for-2 with a two RBI. Sophomore right-hander Autumn Anderson (Fort Collins, Colo.) tossed the first two and 2/3 innings and registered three strikeouts as sophomore righty Jordan Llinas (Houston, Texas) struck out a career-high five and walked just one in four and 1/3 innings of relief work, picking up the win in her first decision of the season.
Southern right-handed pitcher Aubrion James took the loss after giving up four earned runs in three and 1/3 innings in the circle.
"It was definitely a good win going into this week," Dickson added. "That's what we need to do, it's what we need to do every game to be successful."
