LAKE CHARLES, La. - A three-set win by junior Kaja Ljubic in the number-five singles slot was the only thing that prevented the Stephen F. Austin women's tennis from being shut out for the fifth time this season as the Ladyjacks dropped a 6-1 Southland Conference decision at McNeese Sunday afternoon at the Nancy Hank Tennis Center.
Ljubic posted a 6-3, 6-7, 10-3 triumph over Charoline Erlandsson and that was one of the two singles bouts that went to three sets on the day. The loss pushed the Ladyjacks' 2018 record to 0-11 and 0-4 in league play while the Cowgirls moved to 7-2 and evened up their Southland record at 1-1.
McNeese posted wins at the number-one and number-three doubles lines to take the doubles point and earn an early 1-0 lead. Siân Payne then fell to Sarah Jurakova 6-0, 6-1 before the Cowgirls opened up a 3-0 advantage with Phonexay Chitdara's 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Nida Kamal on the number-six line.
Giovanna Fioretti bested Gabi Guilarte 7-5, 6-3 in number-one singles before Ljubic broke up the Cowgirls' shutout bid with her win in the fifth flight. Darinka Tiboldi forced a third set with Sarah Jurakova in number-two singles but came up short by a 7-5, 3-6, 10-2 tally. Armelle Cerdan took a total of 10 games from Marija Mastilovic in fourth-line singles but fell 7-5, 7-5 to close out the match.
SFA returns home to the Schlief Tennis Complex with hopes of locking up its first win of the season. The Ladyjacks' two-match weekend starts Saturday at noon when Southland Conference foe New Orleans pays a visit to Nacogdoches.
