COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team lost twice Sunday at the Mitchell Tennis Complex on the campus of Texas A&M, beginning their day with a 4-0 setback to Liberty before falling 6-0 to the host Aggies.
The start of Sunday's action was delayed due to inclement weather and sophomore Armelle Cerdan was the only Ladyjacks who won a singles set during the Ladyjacks two-match day.
MATCH ONE | Liberty 4, SFA 0
It was anyone point during the doubles portion of the match as Siân Payne and Gabi Guilarte captured a 6-2 triumph over Maria Medina and Lara Soares. That countered a win by the Liberty duo of Rebekah Anderson and Grace Hashiguchi over Armelle Cerdan and Kaja Ljubic in the number three line and knotted tandem play at 1-1.
It was the Lady Flames, however, who wound up taking a 1-0 lead. Nida Kamal and Darinka Tiboldi fell 6-3 to Evangeline Crist and Anna Dollar in the top-flight match.
Headed to singles action, the Ladyjacks tried their best to play catch up but were unable to keep pace with the Lady Flames after they secured the momentum. Guilarte registered a win in only one game in her number one line battle with Medina, falling 6-0, 6-1.
Kamal fared slightly better against Polina Miroshnichenko on the number four line by claiming three games but still lost by a 6-2, 6-1 tally. Liberty clinched the match after Tiboldi was unable to keep up with Crist during the number three match. SFA's sophomore found herself on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-3 tally.
At the time the match concluded, three singles bouts were left unfinished. Payne, who dropped the first set to Dollar 6-4, was up 4-3 in an attempt to force a third set while Cerdan was in the midst of trying to come back and force a third set against Anderson. Cerdan trailed 6-1, 6-5 when the match was called and Ljubic found herself on the wrong end of a 7-6 (7-4), 2-0 score before Liberty locked up the match-clinching point.
MATCH TWO | Texas A&M 6, SFA 0
In a reversal of normal protocol, the teams chose to begin things with the singles matches with the doubles matches to be played only if necessary.
The Aggies leaped out to an early 3-0 lead as Ljubic (number six singles), Kamal (number four singles) and Payne (number two singles) each lost by scores of 6-1, 6-1 to Iulia Ivascu, Riley McQuaid and Macarena Olivares.
Tiboldi, who was inserted into the number three line, fared slightly better against Eva Paalma and won five games before falling 6-2, 6-3 in the one-on-one bout that sealed the deal for Texas A&M.
Again it was Guilarte in the number one flight and the sophomore dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision to Domenica Gonzalez. Cerdan started off on the wrong foot against Dorthea Faa-Hviding, before knotting mattes at one set apiece with a 7-5 win.
Faa-Hviding responded in the tieberak set, however, sealing the Aggies' shutout win with a 10-6 tally.
The Ladyjacks return to their home courts of the Schlief Tennis Complex Saturday morning at 11:00 a.m. where they will continue their non-conference schedule against in-state foe Texas State.
