NACOGDOCHES, Texas - According to the win probability graph of the ESPN app, the SFA men's basketball team had a 1.5-percent chance to win Tuesday night's non-conference game against Marist with 3:23 left. The odds, suffice it to say, were not in the 'Jacks' favor.
Fortunately, the 'Jacks - namely the duo of senior Shannon Bogues and freshman Jock Hughes - remembered the advice of swashbuckling Star Wars rogue Han Solo: never tell me the odds.
Hughes drilled a game-tying corner three-pointer with 1:07 left and Bogues gave SFA its only lead of the game with 14 ticks to go with a cold-blooded straightaway long ball to help the 'Jacks overcome a 17-point halftime deficit and claim a 64-60 victory over Marist in a campus site game of the 2018 Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic.
First Half
• Playing basketball in the Lone Star State for the first time in program history, the Red Foxes brought a scorching long-range shooting touch with them from Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
• Marist connected on 53.3-percent (8-of-15) of its three-pointers in the opening 20 minutes of action and long range hits from David Knudsen and Isaiah Lamb in the first 91 second of the game staked the visitors to an early 6-0 lead.
• Fitzgerald stroked one of his two first-half long balls to cut the Red Foxes' lead to 6-5 with 17:30 to go in the frame but SFA was unable to grab the lead at any point in the opening stanza.
• Continuing his strong first-half play, Fitzgerald went on a personal 5-0 run to knot matters at 16-all with 14:01 to go in the half. Marist, however, answered in a big way.
• The Red Foxes netted the next 13 points, getting six from Lamb who drilled a pair of three-pointers. Marist owned a 29-16 lead with 9:20 left in the half and SFA never got closer than eight points away for the remainder of the half.
• Neither team scored in the final 2:22 of the half, but Fitzgerald managed to pull the 'Jacks within 10 at the break by hammering down a powerful two-handed driving slam.
• In all, Fitzgerald had reset his season-high in the opening 20 minutes of action by netting 16 of the 'Jacks' 29 markers.
Second Half
• A lengthy halftime break did not cool off the Red Foxes' shooting touch early in the second half as an 8-1 run through the first 3:02 of the frame put the 'Jacks in a 47-30 hole. Marist drilled two more threes during that surge before SFA began the comeback process.
• The 'Jacks held Marist without a single point for 8:30 and went on a 7-0 run in that span to trim the Red Foxes' edge down to 10. Junior guard Aaron Augustin assisted on two of the 'Jacks' three field goal makes during that surge including Kevon Harris' two-handed slam with 10:17 to go that brought SFA's crowd into it.
• Shannon Bogues hammered home a fast-break jam with 5:06 remaining that cut the Marist lead down to 51-43. The Red Foxes, however, answered that dunk with a 6-0 run consisting of a long ball by Lamb and a trio of free throw makes by Brian Parker that extended the visitors' lead to 57-43 with 3:57 left.
• It was then that the 'Jacks ratcheted up the defensive intensity a notch or two. SFA forced four Marist turnovers in the final 3:01 and those throwaways led to 11 points. Included among those 11 points were Hughes' equalizing three-ball and Bogues' go-ahead downtown swish.
• Nedrow misfired on a desperation triple with three second left and Harris nailed a pair of free throws to put SFA up 63-60.
• While attempting to inbound the ball to put up a game-tying shot, Marist called timeout with 1.7 seconds left. The only problem was that the Red Foxes had no more timeouts left. The officials administered a technical foul and Bogues iced the game by splitting a pair at the line.
Key Performers/Statistics of Note
• Hughes established a number of season - and career - highs in the win, posting 11 points, and a trio of three-pointers. All three of the freshman's three-pointers came in an 89-second stretch late in the second half.
