Lumberjack associate head coach has been involved with USA Basketball since 2023
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Stephen F. Austin associate head men's basketball coach Jimmy Smith has been named the lead coach of USA Basketball's upcoming men's 3x3 development camp set for April 17-19 in Phoenix, the organization announced on Thursday morning.
Smith is no stranger to USA Basketball having been involved with the organization since 2023. He served as head coach of the USA 3x3 U23 National Team, leading the team to a silver medal at the 2024 FIBA U23 World Cup, and has also coached the USA 3x3 U21 National Team. Most recently, Smith coached a USA Basketball-affiliated professional 3x3 team, which won the USA Basketball 3x3 National Championship in summer 2025.
A highly successful head coach at the Division III level with 201 career wins over four stops spanning a dozen years, Smith joined first-year head coach Matt Braeuer's SFA staff in April 2025. He was instrumental in the Jacks' successes in 2025-26 as the program won 28 games, the fourth most in a single season, captured the Southland Conference regular season title and earned a bid to the National Invitation Tournament.
PER THE ANNOUNCEMENT: The camp features under-23 men's athletes, three of whom have previous USA Basketball experience. Camp participants include Hank Alvey, Mark Armstrong, Finley Bizjack, Gavin Cote, Boden Kapke, CJ Gunn, Christian Hammond, Kevair Kennedy, Pace Prosser and Nasir Whitlock.
Bizjack and Kapke boast prior USA 3x3 experience. The two were teammates on the squad that won the 2024 FIBA 3x3 Nations League Americas Conference in Mexico City before appearing on the FIBA 3x3 World Tour last year as members of Team Phoenix.
Armstrong is a USA Basketball gold medalist at the 2022 FIBA U18 Men's AmeriCup. He also represented the U.S. at the 2023 FIBA U19 Men's World Cup, finishing fourth.
The remaining seven athletes will participate with USA Basketball for the first time in Phoenix.
ABOUT 3x3 BASKETBALL
Different than 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams "clear" the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
