NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Fresh off a weekend in which it faced some of the top competition in the Southland this season at home, the Stephen F. Austin soccer team gets another stiff test in town on Friday when they host the 8-3-1 Bears of Central Arkansas. The match will kick off at 7:00 p.m. and will be shown via ESPN+. Live stats will be also be available for fans to follow along with all the action for Friday's match.
Stephen F. Austin comes into the matchup having played plenty of minutes as of late as a result of three consecutive double-overtime matches, a program record. A scoreless draw at Corpus Christi was followed by a 1-1 draw with McNeese on Friday, and Sunday's match with Lamar was headed towards a tie as well before a late score by Lamar snatched away a victory for the red birds. Now sitting at 3-5-2 overall and 1-2-2 in SLC play, the 'Jacks are tied for eighth in the conference standings entering a one-match weekend with the third-place Bears.
"One of the great things about having one-game weekends is that both teams get to prepare for just one match", said SFA head coach Wally Crittenden. "From a scouting standpoint, from a player matchup standpoint and overall preparation standpoint you just get to invest everything into that one opponent. UCA is a game that always demands the best of both teams, we've seen some great soccer played in this matchup in recent years and we're excited to get them here at home this season."
The Ladyjacks have struggled at times on the offensive end this season, but a three-goal weekend as a result of a shift in formation may shown signs of improvement moving forward.
Sunday saw two new faces find the back of the net, as Katie Jennings and Caylon McMillan both netted their first goals of the 2018 season in the match. As a whole, the 'Jacks are led in points by Katelyn Termini and Mari Gillespie, each of whom have five points off the strength of two goals and an assist. With its best soccer still ahead of it, SFA can secure three big points with a win over Central Arkansas on Friday, but the Bears won't make it easy, as they lead the Southland in conference play with 14 goals.

In goal, three-year starter Lauren Mercuri leads the Bears with 12 games started, three shutouts and a 1.06 goals-against-average.
In goal, SFA has relied on a pair of capable netminders to split time this season, as Allyson Halliday and Madeline Talbot have each had strong stretches of play this season in making six and four starts, respectively. Together, the pair have combined to shut out four opponents this season and own a cumulative 1.78 goals-against-average (1.40 in SLC play).
