STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- The men's and women's cross country teams both raced to a ninth place finish at the OSU Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma on Saturday, with the men totaling 255 points and the women, 234. The field included multiple teams ranked inside the top 30 in the national rankings, including host Oklahoma State, which took first place on the men's side.
"It's kind of tough to gauge the team's performance overall", said SFA head coach Cody Clark. "It was an okay result, but the problem is when you finish nine out of 10 teams it's tough to say you had a good meet. Obviously we had a couple nationally ranked teams up front and that means our scores and finish is going to be a bit higher, but we did have some bright spots on the day. I think our women's team raced pretty well overall, we found out some things we need to improve on and will continue to work out those kinks as we move forward."
For the women, Brittany Innis was once again the top finisher, finishing 27th overall with a time of 22:02. Sophomore Taryn Surratt finished 72nd with a time of 22:39, followed by Claire Crone at 122nd with a time of 22:55. Rounding out the lineup for SFA in the women's race were freshmen Christina Hernandez (23:10), Elizabeth Guerra (23:50) and Kelsey Ramirez (24:43).
"On the women's side, I thought Brittany had a really good race in leading our team with a 27th place finish. When you look at the runners she finished amongst and realize that they are on nationally ranked teams, it says a lot about her performance. Liz Guerra also ran pretty well in this race and improved on her earlier results. I think some of our runners came out too aggressive early on in the race, and it hurt them because this course is so tough."
Leading SFA on the men's side was Erick Rotich, who finished 41st in the men's field with a time of 26:02. Evan Barron finished 90th overall with a time of 26:37, while Larry Deramus was close behind at 26:48. Quinlin McGregor finished with a time of 26:53, followed closely by Caleb Pickett at 27:01. Pedro Flores (27:45), John Shirk (28:19) and Jeremy Rich (28.32) rounded out the lineup for the men.
Next up for SFA is the Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. That race will take place on October 13th and will be hosted by the University of Alabama.
