Successful fall slate places ‘Jacks inside nation’s top 40 with department’s highest-ever ranking
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Stephen F. Austin Athletics has reached a department-best ranking of 39th nationally in the Learfield Directors' Cup DI Fall Standings. The top 40 nod among all Division I institutions has the Lumberjacks as the seventh-highest ranked non-FBS institution. Among those seven FCS-playing schools, the 'Jacks are the fourth-highest ranked non-Ivy League department. Houston Christian, Lamar and Southeastern Louisiana are the second-highest ranked Southland Conference departments at 131st.
SFA garnered 122.0 total points. Lumberjack football led with 70 total points; men's cross country followed with 27.0 points and Ladyjack volleyball recorded 25.0 total points. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA Championships.
The Lumberjacks have dominated the Southland Conference since the league's first action in late August. Both SFA men's and women's cross country teams won SLC titles, SFA volleyball claimed both the regular season and conference tournament titles and SFA football went unbeaten in league play to earn the SLC crown. Additionally, SFA soccer finished second in the SLC regular season and as runner-up at the SLC tournament. On the hardwood, the SFA men are one of two unbeaten programs in league play heading into the Christmas break and have the second-most overall wins in the league. The SFA women are inside the league's top five and tied for the most overall wins this season.
The final fall standings for Division I and Division III will be published on Thursday, January 22. The Learfield Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today.
