SFA will race against nationally ranked opponents on both the men's and women's side
STILLWATER, Oklahoma – After a weekend off from competition, the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country teams will resume their fall season at the OSU Jamboree in Stillwater, Oklahoma this Saturday. The Jamboree is the oldest consecutively running cross country meet in the nation, and represents a tough challenge for SFA both in terms of the strength of the field and the terrain of the course.
"The field is going to include roughly 10 teams, and it's going to be high end competition, with three or four of those teams ranked in the national poll", said SFA cross country coach Cody Clark. "We're looking to have a good race by our standards, just focus on what we want to see get done and run a good race. It's a super slow course, very hilly and very soft, so it's going to be just as challenging mentally as it is physically."
Saturday's field includes three teams ranked in the top 30 nationally on the men's side (Tulsa, Ole Miss and host OSU) and three on the women's side (Ole Miss, Penn State and host OSU), with a additional two more in the women's field that are receiving votes in the national poll in Tulsa and Missouri. The host Cowboys won the event last season, while Tulsa came in first on the women's side.
The race will be a full length affair, with the men running an 8k race and the women running a 6k. SFA will run a full squad on both the men's and women's side, as they look to improve upon both the individual and team result from last time out at the SLC Pre-Conference meet.
"We've been preparing for this meet for a week and a half, and the team knows heading in that it's going to be a challenging race", Clark added. "We've got a few people dealing with injuries, but otherwise we're running at full strength heading into Saturday. We've got to have some people step up, because last race we had some mixed results, and that's just not going to get the job done, so I hope we'll see some people improve this time out."
The OSU Jamboree began in 1937, and will mark its 81st running this Saturday, making it the longest tenured consecutively run cross country race in the nation.
