ABILENE, Texas-- A mix of new faces and familiar ones paced the Stephen F. Austin men's and women's cross country teams to second place finishes at the Naimadu SLC Pre-Conference Meet on Saturday in Abilene, Texas. Two other Southland Conference schools (Incarnate Word and host Abilene Christian) competed in the event alongside SFA.
"I thought it was a pretty good starter race for us", said SFA cross country head coach Cody Clark. "It was kind of windy out there and the footing wasn't the best, but I thought both our teams did pretty well despite that. Some of our girls raced really well, it was nice to see Brittany (Innis) do well on the women's side to lead us, as well as getting some good performances from Taryn (Surratt), Claire (Crone) and Christina (Hernandez). On the men's side, Eric Rotich and Evan Barron raced well for us, and Quinlin McGregor also put in a good performance for us. Overall, I think we got a good feel for the course and know what to expect when we come back here later for the conference championship.
In the women's 6K race, Brittany Innis led the way with a fourth place finish time of 22:18, while teammate Taryn Surratt came in seventh with a time of 22:50. Finishing ninth was Claire Crone with a time of 23:03, finishing just ahead of true freshman Christina Hernandez at 23:07 in 10th. Fellow Freshman Carolyn Evans finished 16th with a time of 23:55, followed by classmate Elizabeth Guerra (18th, 24:11). Freshmen Kelsey Ramirez (26th, 25:23) and LaSean Davis (28th, 25:43) rounded out the women's lineup at the event.
On the men's side, the team finished second despite a late scratch of Titus Kiplagat from the race. Junior Erick Rotich finished second in the 8k race with a time of 25:29 in his first race for SFA, while Evan Barron notched a fourth-place finish at 26:01. Quinlin McGregor notched a strong seventh place finish at 26:18, followed closely by teammate Larry Deramus in eighth place with a time of 26:26 . True freshmen Jeremy Rich (14th, 26:46) and Caleb Pickett (16th, 26:53) finished fifth and sixth for the team, respectively, while John Shirk (21st, 27:51), Pedro Flores (24th, 28:21) and Chris Shirk (27th, 28:43) rounded out the SFA lineup.
