NACOGDOCHES, Texas – With 16 days remaining until its 2016 season opener, the Stephen F. Austin volleyball team opened up official practices in Shelton Gym on Tuesday afternoon under the direction of 29th-year head coach Debbie Humphreys.
Picked to finish in first place in the 13-team Southland Conference in the league’s annual preseason coaches’ poll, the Ladyjacks’ roster features a multitude of new faces among the 16 team members. Just four upperclassmen – two juniors and two seniors – make up the 2016 version of the Ladyjacks and eight of the remaining 12 players are newcomers. Humphreys and her staff guided the team through various offensive and defensive exercises that gauged the readiness of the squad as it prepares for continued improvement throughout the preseason.
Senior Justice Walker and junior Abby McIntyre landed Preseason All-Southland Conference acclaim last week and along with Shannon Connell and Lexus Cain will be looked to for leadership on a team featuring seven freshmen.
SFA is coming off a 20-14 season in 2015 which included an 11-5 finish in Southland Conference play – good for third place in the league standings. The Ladyjacks will travel to Green Bay, Wis., to get their season started when they take on Eastern Illinois at the Country Inn & Suites Green Bay Invitational. First serve in the season opener for both teams has been set for 10:00 a.m. at the Kress Center.
