Southland Conference Player of the Week Release (4/25/16)
FRISCO, Texas - Following a three-game stretch of production at the plate that was unparalleled among the Stephen F. Austin baseball ranks this season, senior infielder Kyle Thornell was recognized as the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week via a press release issued by the league office on Monday afternoon.
No `Jack played a bigger part in SFA taking two out of three games against Incarnate Word than the senior out of Magnolia, Texas. In the `Jacks' 7-1 series-opening win over the Cardinals, the offense flowed almost exclusively from the bat of Thornell as he slugged a pair of three-run home runs - one in the first and one in the third. He wrapped up his Friday night six RBI and two runs on the strength of his 2-for-3 showing at the dish.
Another round of game-winning runs came off of his bat on Saturday afternoon when his three-run long ball in the third put SFA on top for good in the `Jacks 11-1 thumping of UIW. Those three home runs over the two-day span pushed his career total to 17 - good for the 10th-most all-time on SFA's all-time charts.
His final weekly line featured any number of eye-popping figures, foremost among them an absurd 2.167 slugging percentage. In total, went 4-for-6 at the plate with nine RBI, six runs and five walks. Boasting a weekly on-base percentage of .833, the senior was intentionally walked twice by the UIW pitching staff.
By batting at a .667 clip over the course of the three-game series, Thornell hiked his season average to .331 and moved into second on the team with 34 RBI. His season slugging percentage of .568 ranks second among the `Jacks and fifth among all Southland Conference players.
Thornell and the rest of the `Jacks return to the diamond on Tuesday evening when they host the University of Louisiana Monroe at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference showdown.
