NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Senior forward Chelsea Raymond became the Stephen F. Austin all-time career points leader outright with 98 points, as the women’s soccer team thumped Southern University 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the SFA Soccer Field.
Raymond scored her third goal of the season, striking on a one-on-one opportunity in the 53rd minute, to surpass former teammate Kylie Louw (96 points - 2009-12) for the all-time honor.
SFA (4-2-1) outshot the Jaguars (7-0) 18-3, with 11 shots on goal, while the stellar play of the Ladyjack defense limited SU to just three shots in total. SFA also led 9-1 on corner kicks.
The Ladyjacks got goals from Zuri Prince, Dallas Brown, Raymond, Jasmine White and Ashton Norman in their largest margin of victory since an 8-0 shutout at Jackson State (8/19/12) during the 2012 season.
Prince opened the scoring bout for SFA, delivering goals in the third and fifth minutes, her first two of the season, to put the Ladyjacks up 2-0 through 4:33. Both of Prince’s goals were unassisted, scoring on a put back in front of the net and strike from the top of the box.
SFA then got an own goal from the Jaguars (6:46), with the ball hitting off one of their defenders, to push the Ladyjacks up 3-0 through seven minutes, before Brown scored on a empty goal (35:15) to make it 4-0 at the half. Freshman Lauren Hall drew goalkeeper Sarah Forde (0-7) out of the net, before dishing the ball to Brown for the chip in, her first of the season.
In the second period, Raymond extended the lead to 5-0 on her break away in the box, receiving a standing ovation for the career milestone.
White added to the Ladyjack lead, finishing a corner kick from sophomore Amanda Doyle in the 58th minute for her second of the season, before Norman scored her first goal of the season on a one-on-one opportunity to end the match 7-0, SFA’s fourth shutout of the season.
With the win, the Ladyjacks close their non-conference schedule and will now begin preparation for Southland Conference action. SFA, the three-time defending conference champion and preseason favorite for 2014, opens its SLC slate at Northwestern State on Sunday, Sept. 21. The Ladyjacks will meet NWST at 1 p.m. at the Lady Demon Soccer Complex.
Postgame Quotes:
Head Coach Wally Crittenden
Crittenden’s opening statement:
“It was good game. From a competitive standpoint we knew we were going to be able to do some things. We expected that if we came out with a renewed edge and a renewed sense of purpose in response to our Friday night game, we would be able to put ourselves in positions to be successful. Ultimately, we wanted to make sure that we added some variety in our attack so when we got into the second half we put stress on our players to begin connecting the ball in the middle and to play through traffic, as opposed to playing on the flank, on the perimeter and ultimately with the diagonal ball that worked really well today.
“The spirit was good and the energy was good. You could tell that we shook that flattened edge that we experienced on Friday. When you play so many games on the road against quality competition, at some point you’re going to get a little flat, but they still got the result on Friday and then they came out here and there wasn’t much we had to say. It was at home, great temperatures, playing in front of your home crowd, and so they’re going to be excited. Any game, if we have that competitive standard, regardless of opponent, we’re going to be in a position to be successful.”
Crittenden on Chelsea Raymond becoming the SFA career all-time points leader:
“It’s fantastic. I think it’s a little bit of weight off her shoulders. I think she can now move forward and focus on each game and what each game represents as we move into conference play next Sunday. You just have one less distraction. I tell you what, Chelsea Raymond, her hitting that benchmark today is one, a byproduct of her fantastic teammates that she has, and two, a byproduct of her career and what she’s put together – her body of work, if you will. She’s just getting started. She has a lot more goals in her. Our front five are looking really good right now and Chelsea is definitely a part of that.”
Crittenden on being able to work on different schemes:
There’s no one else in our conference that plays the non-conference schedule that we play. And there are some goods and some bads with that. The good is that from a competitive standard, your team is battle tested. When you put yourself against the best, you measure yourself against the best. The bad part about that is you may not get to experiment with your roster or your schemes with it that you may want to. What I think it does is the tempo and the speed of play that we saw today was a byproduct of the competitive games we’ve had prior to today and the ability to build our entire roster and incorporate our roster from a fitness standpoint and a scheme standpoint, really puts us in a good position going into conference.”
Crittenden on upcoming opponent (Northwestern State):
“Yeah, Northwestern State, they’re going to be motivated. They’re going to be excited. George (Van Linder) does a great job out there. It’s a game that I think we match up really well from a system standpoint. We also match up really well from a tactical standpoint, from a possession and how we like to play. Ultimately, I think we’ll see some of what we’ve seen the last couple games regarding how the opponents will play us. If we represent ourselves and head out there for the short trip, it’s an away game for sure, but it’s about as home as you can get. There are a lot of positives going into next week, but so do they so it’s going to be a fantastic match.”
Senior forward Chelsea Raymond
Raymond on becoming SFA’s all-time points leader:
“It’s exciting. I got to play with Kylie (Louw) and it was such an honor to play with her. To finally get my name on something really means a lot. My team helped me get there. They were able to put me in a position to be successful and it’s a pleasure to play with them.”
