AUSTIN, Texas – Senior forward Chelsea Raymond extended her all-time goals mark with the 41st of her career, but the Stephen F. Austin women’s soccer team fell 4-2 to No. 25 Arkansas on Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium and Soccer Field on the University of Texas campus.
With a goal in the 63rd minute, Raymond moved one step closer to the SFA (2-2-0) all-time points record of 96. With the goal against the Razorbacks (3-0-1), the native of Irving, Texas, picked up two points to move her career total to 94. Raymond now sits just two points away from what former teammate Kylie Louw (2009-12) established in 2012.
"This was a great game to be a part of,” head coach Wally Crittenden said. “We are very close to competing where we need to be. We had some really good possessions and some very dangerous attacks today. We scored two fantastic goals as well. That being said, our team’s defensive execution was a little lacking and this is something we will make sure we appreciate moving forward. Whether in the attack or in defense, execution is the difference at this level and the more experience our kids get with these demands, the better we will be at executing our game plan come conference play. We now have a long week to recover and heal up before we take on LSU down in Baton Rouge. Another great game for sure."
Sophomore forward Amanda Doyle joined Raymond with one goal against ARK, the first of the season for both Ladyjacks, as SFA was narrowly edged 15-14 in shots and 6-5 in shots on goal. The Razorbacks held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior goalkeeper Morgan Glick’s record evened at 2-2 on the young season, making two saves and allowing all four goals across 90 minutes in the net.
ARK struck first, as Tyler Allen scored on a through-ball in the box in the 12th minute, before Ashleigh Ellenwood, who assisted on the first goal, scored one of her own in the 15th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
Doyle answered the second goal of the Razorbacks, getting the Ladyjacks on the board just under a minute and a half (1:29) later on a strong feed from senior Zuri Prince to take a 2-1 deficit into the break. The assist was Prince’s third of the season and 16th of her career, moving her into third place all-time outright.
After the Razorbacks scored their third goal of the match in the 55th minute to retake a two-goal advantage (3-1), Ramyond pulled SFA back within reach on a strike in the 63rd minute, dribbling around defenders to create space.
ARK would have one more answer however, converting on a free kick at the top of the box in the 77th minute to arrive at the 4-2 final.
The Ladyjacks will enjoy a week of recovery, before heading to LSU. SFA and the Tigers will meet in Baton Rouge on Monday, Sept. 8, at 6 p.m.
