FRISCO, Texas - Sophomore libero OJ Olson was named the Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced Monday afternoon on Labor Day. The weekly honor is the first of Olson's career and comes in the opening week of the 2013 season.
Olson averaged 4.73 digs per set in helping SFA to a perfect 3-0 weekend mark and the tournament championship at the Southern Miss Invitational. The Cedar Park, Texas, native was named MVP of the tournament for her efforts.
She recorded a career-high 31 digs in a five-set win over Troy in the season opener for both teams and eight and 13 digs respectively in wins over Jackson State and Southern Miss. The 52 total digs and 4.73 average were both good enough for fourth in the league.
Olson and the Ladyjacks, fresh off a 3-0 sweep at Louisiana-Monroe, will continue the season Friday, Aug. 6, against George Washington in the Holiday Inn Select/UCF Classic in Orlando, Fla.
