
SFA Takes Two In Fort Worth

FORT WORTH, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team claimed a pair of matches Saturday, with wins over Grambling State and Houston, at the TCU Nike/Molten Invitational at the University Recreation Center.
Justice Walker was named to the all tournament team for SFA (8-4) following the completion of round-robin play.
The Ladyjacks will open Southland Conference play Thursday, Sept. 19, hosting New Orleans in the Shelton Gym.
SFA 3, GSU 0
SFA picked up its eight consecutive sweep over the Tigers (2-9) in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-13, 25-16) win.
Walker headlined a SFA offense that hit a .392 clip, recording 11 kills across three sets. Jill Ivy finished with eight and Paige Holland finished with 17 assists.
OJ Olson had 12 digs in the victory, as the Ladyjacks recorded five blocks as a team.
SFA never trailed as they cruised into the break with a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, after breaking a 3-3 tie, the Ladyjacks went on a 22-13 run the rest of the way to remain unscathed against GSU.
SFA 3, UH 2
Ivy recorded 21 kills for SFA in a 3-2 (24-26, 25-19, 25-10, 21-25, 15-10) win over Houston (7-4) in the final match of the tournament for both teams.
Holland recorded 35 assists, as three Ladyjacks recorded double-figure digs. Olson finished with 21, and Janet Hill and Shannon Connell recorded 14 and 10 respectively.
Leslie Jackson led SFA at the net with six block assists, as the team recorded 12 blocks as a unit.
Despite six-kill and five-kill efforts from Walker and Kaitlyn Granger, SFA fell 24-26 in the opening set.
The Ladyjacks rallied to take a 1-1 tie into the break, but it was the third set where SFA established dominance. The Ladyjacks swung a commanding .579 mark in a 25-10 third set victory, to take a 2-1 advantage. Ivy recorded 10 kills between the two sets.
After falling 21-25 in the fourth set, SFA found itself in familiar territory entering a fifth and match-deciding set. The Ladyjacks went the distance, going five-sets in five of their first eight matches to start the season.
Ivy again recorded five kills, as SFA closed out the Cougars in a 15-10 final.
