NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Sabrina Burns and Madison Hanlan were each named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VII volleyball team on Thursday, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Burns was named to the first team and Hanlan to the second team.
The pair of senior Ladyjacks make up two of three player from the Southland to be named to the team, with Burns joining Oral Roberts' Sheina Fernandez on the first team.
To be eligible players had to be of significant contribution to their teams, be at least a sophomore in eligibility and carry a 3.30 GPA or higher while competing as a significant contributor in at least half of the team's matches for the season.
It is the third consecutive season for both players to be named to the team, pulling it off in each of their three years of eligibility for the honor. In fact, they switched places this season after Hanlan was a first-team choice in 2011 with Burns landing on the second team.
The selections also mark the fifth consecutive season in which SFA has had a player earn first-team recognition. Burns is one of two players on the District VII team with a perfect 4.00 GPA, doing so in accounting. Meanwhile, Hanlan registered a 3.96 in cellular and molecular biology.
In addition to stellar work in the classroom, both players are experiencing stellar seasons on the court. Burns has been named the SLC defensive player of the week once this season and leads the Ladyjacks with a .240 attack percentage while also hitting for 2.48 kills and 0.99 blocks per set. She has hit for double-figure kills 14 times this season, including a career-high 20 kills in a win over Nicholls.
Meanwhile Hanlan is currently third in the league with 4. 77 digs per set and has already moved into second all-time at SFA in digs, trailing only former all-American libero Stephanie Figgers in that category. Her 47 digs in a five-set win over Nicholls was a new school record and was the most in the league in a single match since 2006.
With her selection to the first team, Burns will be included on the ballot for Academic All-America honors in December.
