DURHAM, N.C. - Baseball America announced its annual summer league prospect rankings on Thursday with a pair of Lumberjacks - infielder Hunter Dozier and pitcher Cass Ingvardsen - being named to the list.
Dozier, who was named the Texas Collegiate League's freshman of the year for the East Texas Pump Jacks, was named the No. 3 prospect in the entire TCL. Meanwhile, Ingvardsen, a right-handed pitcher transferring in from Weatherford College, was named the No. 4 overall prospect in the Jayhawk League after a stellar summer for the Dodge City A's.
It did not take long for Dozier to make a name for himself after a breakout freshman campaign for SFA. After playing shortstop for the entire spring with the Lumberjacks, Dozier moved to the hot corner for the Pump Jacks, and hit .301 in the wood-bat league with 50 hits, 31 RBI, 26 runs scored and 10 stolen bases for an East Texas squad that led the league in each of those statistical categories. He was named to the league's all-star team and was ranked in the league's top 10 for hitting and was one of just three players in the entire TCL to bat at least .300 with at least 25 runs scored, 30 RBI and 10 steals.
He is youngest player named to the Baseball America's top 10 list in the TCL, and is the third consecutive Pump Jack to win the league's freshman of the year award. He directly followed current Texas A&M third baseman Matt Juengel, who was the 2010 TCL freshman of the year.
This year for SFA he hit .315 in 56 games, slugging .467 with 18 extra-base hits and 34 RBI. He earned the league's hitter of the week nod once, and had a stretch late in the season in which he homered in four straight ballgames.
As for Ingvardsen, the 6-foot-1, 210-pound incoming junior pitcher was one of the top arms in the Jayhawk League this summer after a spring season that saw him go 3-2 with a 1.13 ERA for Weatherford College, walking just five and fanning 15 in just 16 innings.
He parlayed that into a 45th-round selection by the New York Yankees in the MLB Draft before moving on to the Dodge City A's. There he went 4-1 with a 1.80 ERA, punching out 28 in 30 innings of work.
Baseball America annually releases a complete ranking of the top 10 prospects in all of the nation's summer leagues. Dozier and Ingvardsen make it two consecutive years that SFA has had a prospect named to a list after outfielder Bryson Myles was named as one of the top talents in the TCL following his 2010 season.
