FRISCO, Texas - Ladyjack senior MC Bottles has been named the Southland Conference offensive player of the week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon after she helped push SFA to a perfect 4-0 mark in the season's opening weekend.
It is the third such honor for Bottles, but the first time she has gotten the nod on the offensive side having twice previously been named defensive player of the week. It is also the first time a Ladyjack has earned the league's weekly honor since September 2009.
Bottles was key in leading the Ladyjacks to a perfect weekend at the Georgia Southern Spring Hill Suites Invitational, sparking SFA to its first 4-0 start since the 1992 season. After a slow start with just six kills in a five-set win over Georgia Southern, the senior from Rowlett, Texas, caught fire, hitting .440 over the final three matches of the tournament and averaging 4.09 kills per set in the final three wins. She finished the weekend hitting at a .336 clip and averaging 3.19 kills per set.
She swung .577 and tallied 16 kills and three blocks in a four-set win over Jacksonville, before backing that up with a 14-kill effort in a sweep of South Dakota State which included half of her kill total in the final set alone. She closed out the tournament with another stellar match, hitting .323 with 15 kills in a win over Montana State.
A three-time all-SLC honoree and preseason all-SLC first team selection, Bottles needs just four more kills to reach 1,000 for her career. She and the rest of the Ladyjacks will look to continue their perfect start on Wednesday when they travel to Monroe, La., to take on ULM before heading to Martin, Tenn., where they will take part in the UT-Martin Skyhawk Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
