NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Junior pitcher Chase Wier became the second Lumberjack taken in the 2011 Major League Baseball first-year player draft on Tuesday when he was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 21st round.
Wier, a Nacogdoches native and converted outfielder, was taken with the 643rd overall pick of the draft and joins Bryson Myles as the first two Lumberjacks selected in the draft. He was a key member of one of the top statistical pitching staff in the Southland Conference, making 21 appearances in his first year on the hill and posting a 3-1 record with one save and a 3.06 ERA.
The right-hander punched out 30 in 35.1 innings and held hitters to just a .208 batting average and even held left-handers to just a .170 mark.
He made two starts on the year, picking up the win both times, including a win in the second game of the Southland Conference Tournament in which he allowed just one run and struck out five in 5.1 innings of work in a 7-1 win over UTSA.
The Lumberjacks now join Texas State, McNeese State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi as Southland Conference schools who have had multiple players selected in this year's draft.
