NACOGDOCHES, Texas - With only one sport remaining to be concluded in the 2010-11 athletic season, the Stephen F. Austin athletics department is in position to claim its second consecutive Southland Conference Commissioner's Cup going into this weekend's baseball series versus Lamar.
SFA, who won the all-sports trophy last year by a record margin, has already clinched the SLC men's all-sports trophy; however, SFA trails UTSA in the overall point standings by a 135.5-130.5 margin with only baseball to go. Point are awarded based on a team's finish in the league standings with 12 points awarded for first place and point decreasing in value going down in the order of finish.
The Lumberjack baseball team currently stands in sole possession of second place with three games remaining, while UTSA stands in a three-way tie for sixth place in the league standings. The Roadrunners play host this weekend to Central Arkansas, who is coming off winning two of three at home against Sam Houston and needs a sweep to keep alive hopes of qualifying for its first Southland Conference Tournament.
Only UTSA and SFA remain in the race for the cup with the `Runners having already clinched the women's all-sports trophy. Last season SFA became just the second Southland institution to sweep all three all-sports trophies, and the first since the 1997-98 season.
The Lumberjacks and Cardinals battle this weekend in a three-set, beginning Thursday at 3:00 p.m. at Jaycees Field.
