NACOGDOCHES, Texas-The Stephen F. Austin baseball team will host its first "Baseball Big Brother Bowling Bash" this Saturday, November 5th, at 10:30 a.m. at Texas Pro Bowl, located on North Street. The purpose of the event is to provide children with a safe, fun activity that they may have never experienced before, as well as expose them to role models with the Lumberjack baseball team.
The children are participants in the Glory Gang organization, run by Executive Director Richard Konderla. The Glory Gang travels into disadvantaged neighborhoods for visitation during the week and sends busses out on Sunday nights to gather children ages 3-to-12 for a high-energy, excitement-filled presentation complete with a meal, music, games and a faith-based message.
The SFA baseball team, under the leadership of head coach Johnny Cardenas, has been working with the Nacogdoches County United Way to give back to the community for two years.
"When I took over the head coaching job, it seemed that our program was always asking the community to support and give to our team," Cardenas said. "We felt it was important that our coaches and team gave back to the community, and felt that we could do that best by partnering with the Nacogdoches County United Way."
Since partnering with NCUW in 2009, the SFA baseball team has hosted two "NCUW/Lumberjack Tailgate Parties," which included free hot dogs and games for children who attended. The team has also collaborated with other NCUW volunteers to assist in putting on the Main Street "Square on the Square" event held every October.
"I know my players appreciate the opportunity they have to touch the lives of other people," Cardenas said.
