NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjacks rolled to a 1-0 lead over Houston Baptist, but the Huskies fought back to earn their eighth win of the year over a Southland opponent, 3-1 (16-25, 28-26, 25-21, 25-17) on Wednesday at Shelton Gym.
Jill Ivy led SFA (11-13) with 11 kills and MC Bottles had 10, and four Ladyjacks finished with at least 16 digs on the night, but after dropping consecutive close sets SFA had little left in the tank for the fourth. HBU (18-6) hit just .144 for the match, but it was all they need to move to 8-0 versus Southland competition for the season behind a match-high 14 kills from Isis Gardner.
Madison Hanlan led the Ladyjacks with 22 digs on the match, while Katzy Randall added 19 digs to her eight kills. Melissa Miksch and Paige Holland had 16 digs apiece, with Holland doling out 35 assists to nab a double-double for the match.
The Ladyjacks rolled to a quick 1-0 lead, hitting .200 and getting four kills apiece from both Bottles and Ivy. It did not take long for SFA to take hold of the set, scoring seven of the first nine points of the set and eventually establishing an 11-point lead at the 19-8 mark of the frame after an ace from Melissa Miksch. The Huskies tried to claw back into the set, but the cushion was plenty for SFA with a kill from Bottles closing out the frame.
In set two, neither team was able to gain much of a foothold on the other. There was no more than a one-point lead for either squad after the early going of the set, a set that saw neither team hit better than .077. Still, despite four more kills from Randall and three from Ivy, it was HBU that was able to fight off a set-point and reel off three points of their own to even the match heading into the locker room.
The Huskies were able to overcome an early 13-8 deficit in the third set before going on an 12-4 run that put them out in front for good in the frame. HBU hit .304 in the third set, compared to just .152 for SFA. Bottles and Sabrina Burns had three kills apiece in the set, but HBU still managed to score 18 kills in the set to take hold of the match at 2-1.
From there the Huskies left no doubt in the final set, racing out to a 16-5 lead and needing just nine kills to record the eight-point win to close out the match.
SFA will move back into conference play on Saturday when it hosts Nicholls at 1:00 p.m. at Shelton Gym.
