ARLINGTON, Texas - The Ladyjack volleyball team pulled out a critical road victory in Southland Conference play on Thursday, going into Texas Hall and knocking off UT-Arlington, 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19) for its second straight victory.
It was just the second true road win of the season for SFA (10-12, 3-4) and the 10th win in a row over the Mavericks (9-12, 3-4) who had won seven of matches at Texas Hall this season.
SFA hit .229 as a team and got significant offensive contributions from a number of players, but the big three of MC Bottles, Kelsey Owens and Arielle Daron inflicted the most damage, combining for 38 of SFA's 53 kills on the evening. Bottles paced SFA with 13 kills on just 27 tries with one error (.444), while Owens and Daron had a dozen apiece.
Bottles also had a hand in six of SFA's nine blocks on the night, a category that the Ladyjacks won 9-4, while Allison Gideon snagged a double-double with 42 assists and 10 digs for the match. Madison Hanlan added 15 digs
The offense was slow to start as SFA hit just .139 in the first two sets, but the Ladyjacks were able to put together a 10-4 run late in the first set to hit the 25-point mark in time to take a 1-0 lead behind four kills from Bottles and two apiece from Owens, Daron and Sabrina Burns.
UTA's Amanda Aguilera responded with four of her 12 kills for the match in the second set as the Mavs knotted things up at one set apiece, but the Ladyjack offense got rolling following the halftime break in taking the final two sets.
The Ladyjacks only committed two attack errors in the third set and forced a pair of consecutive attack errors from Aguilera to take its largest lead at 20-15 before using scores from Bottles, Daron and Monica Pannone in a final surge that secured a 2-1 Ladyjack lead.
Five Ladyjacks had at least three kills in a balanced attack in the clinching fourth set, while Gideon dished out 10 assists in leading SFA to a .357 attack mark for the frame. The Mavs were on track to send the match to a fifth set, leading 17-15, but after misfires from Aguilera and Tara Frantz tied it up, SFA followed Hanlan's serve for five consecutive scores that extended the lead before Bottles delivered the final blow with her 13th kill of the night.
SFA will go for its third win in a row on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. when it takes on defending SLC Tournament champion Texas State in San Marcos.
