NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Lumberjack pitcher Jared Schrom has been signed by the Texas Rangers following the completion of the Major League Baseball Draft last week.
The `Jacks had three pitchers drafted and Schrom is the fourth that will have a chance to continue his professional career with an MLB organization. The free-agent pick-up will report to the Rangers instructional facility in Surprise, Ariz. That facility is shared by the Kansas City Royals, the team that selected Lumberjack pitcher Richard Folmer in the 25th round of Wednesday's draft.
Schrom went 1-2 with a 6.81 ERA in 2009 just one year after his 2008 season was cut short due to injury. A native of Portland, Texas, in the Corpus Christi area played four years for the `Jacks and was part of the initial freshman class brought in by former head coach Donnie Watson when SFA brought back baseball in 2006.
Schrom was the winning pitcher in SFA's very first game back in 2006, getting a win in relief against Arkansas-Little Rock and went on to post an 8-8 record with a 4.85 ERA in four seasons. His best season came in 2007 when he went 5-3 with a 4.64 ERA, striking out 75 hitters with only 38 walks in 95.0 innings.
His 178.0 innings and his 135 strikeouts for his career currently stands as fifth all-time at SFA.
Schrom has a pedigree of major league success as his father, Ken, pitched eight seasons in the major leagues and even was selected to the 1986 All-Star team as a member of the Cleveland Indians. Schrom's father is currently the president of the Corpus Christi Hooks, the AA affiliate of the Houston Astros.
