NACOGDOCHES, Texas -Tuesday night we had our first (belated) home match of the season versus the University of North Texas. It was good having the home court advantage again and seeing all the fans that came out to support us. It wasn't easy being the Mean Green, as we were able to finish them off in three. P.S. I can draw a pretty sweet Kermit the Frog.
Thursday evening we left for Denton to play in the Spike Ike Classic against a few teams that were in one way or another affected by the wrath of Ike. It was a pretty fun bus ride, enjoying study hall as always, and then finally getting to watch a movie. Once we arrived at the hotel, we ate carrots and Sydney Ellis and I watched a tambourine jamboree on TV.
Friday morning we woke up bright and early for breakfast at 7 in the hotel. The orange juice was a little pulpy, but they had TVs in each individual booth so it evened things out. We played Texas-Pan American at 10am, the earliest match I have played since high school, and we won in three. After our match, we watched Texas Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette play, and then finally went to lunch at McAllister's, where my leg was fried in the window where we were sitting. When our hunger was satisfied, we headed back to the hotel for an hour or so of down time. Most of us took naps, but a few of us managed to find one of the weirdest movies ever made with Robert Downey Jr. and Nicole Kidman: Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus.
That evening we played Texas Tech, and we won in four. It was an exciting game and Coach was glad to have finally beaten her old alma mater. However, I do not know if I was more excited about beating a Big XII school or about eating On the Border after the match. Oh man do I love OTB! I probably ate way too much, but I needed to get my fix since Nacogdoches does not have one of those fine establishments.
Following that long and emotionally-draining day, we had to turn around and wake up early for yet another 10am match versus Louisiana-Lafayette. Yes, we did just play them. They put up more of a fight this time around, but we still took care of them in three. Oh yeah, and we had wonderful line judges and ball rotation people. Instead of having to call lines in the last match as we had presupposed, we were able to just hop on the bus and jet out of town. First we stopped by and picked up lunch at Jason's Deli (or Chipotlé for some- hooray!). The ride home was uneventful, except for Erin's new style of wearing her "clothes," and the fact that we got home around 4pm, which is extremely rare.
This weekend marks the commencement of regular season play in the Southland Conference. We open up with two away games: Friday at 7pm against Central Arkansas, and Monday at 7pm against Northwestern State.
Word of the Week: Petulant - adj. (of a person or their manner) childishly sulky or bad-tempered The Sugar Bears are going to be very upset and petulant when they lose their conference home opener to the Ladyjacks.
