NACOGODCHES, Texas - It took the No. 19 team in the country to shut the `Jacks out for the first time this season as the Houston Cougars took their second win over SFA this season, 5-0, on Tuesday at Jaycees Field.
The `Jacks (14-21, 3-11 SLC) used six pitchers to strike out 10 Cougars, but Houston (23-12, 7-2 CUSA) got three hits and a pair of RBI from Bryan Pounds to lead their offensive attack. In all, Houston only picked up seven hits off of SFA pitchers, but took advantage of five SFA walks and a hit batter to gain extra base runners.
Lance Luetge lost his second consecutive decision, giving up just three runs in three innings of work to go to 4-5 on the year. John Touchton moved to 3-2 on the year by going six shutout innings with six strikeouts and no walks in his second start against SFA this year for the win.
Kevin Crabtree, Kevin Croft and Kai Kirby each had two hits for the `Jacks - the only hits throughout the SFA lineup on the day.
The Cougars went down in order in the first inning, but cracked the scoreboard with a single run in the top of the second on an RBI single from Chris Wallace. Luetge then gave up a two-run homer to Pounds in the third and that was all the margin Touchton would need.
Houston added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings for the final margin.
Erik Gregersen pitched two impressive innings of relief, only allowing two balls to be put in play while striking out five.
The `Jacks get two days off before heading to San Antonio to take on the Roadrunners in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
